Get ready for online personalised assessments

The personalised assessments website will be available from the first week of December. Please visit the tests administration handbook to familiarise yourself with the processes for administering the assessments. A further announcement will be made when the assessments website is ready for use.

Carbon monoxide: information for teachers, parents and guardians

Carbon monoxide (CO) can kill. Prevention of CO poisoning is simple;

  • Signs – the main symptoms of CO poisoning are; headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.
  • Service – make sure all fuel-burning appliances are serviced annually by a qualified engineer.
  • Sound - fit an audible alarm.

Professional Teaching Awards Cymru 2019

Latest information for schools on the current global shortage of Epipens 

Further to our letter of 2 October 2018, an update has been sent to Directors of Education:

In response to the current disruption to the supply of EpiPen® adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs), advice from the Department of Health and Social Care is being frequently updated. We advise that nurseries, schools and pupil referral units should not automatically dispose of their existing AAIs when reaching their expiry date, but look to replace them and seek advice from their pharmacy.

Grant funding doubled for Wales’ most disadvantaged pupils

Even more pupils in Wales will be able to benefit from new school uniforms and kit and equipment for sports and other activities thanks to a £3.5m boost from the Welsh Government.

Safeguarding Week 2018

To support Safeguarding Week 2018, which takes place from 12-16 November, we have developed posters for schools to support children and young people to speak out. The Safeguarding posters are available to download on Hwb.

National reading and numeracy (reasoning) tests ordering system

Schools are able to order National Reading and Numeracy (Reasoning) test papers, order system is open until 23 November 2018.  Schools order tests for their learners through the National Reading and Numeracy Tests Ordering System (external link).

Animations and Materials for the Digital Competence Framework

Digital Competence will be one of three cross curricular responsibilities in our new curriculum and it is important to get these skills embedded now as we make the transition. This does not need to be a threatening process.

EWC Council Member Appointments

The Welsh Government is seeking to appoint 8 new Council members to the EWC for a four year term commencing on 1 April 2019.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who want to contribute to improving the standards of teaching and quality of learning in Wales.

Applications are welcomed from anyone who has a keen interest in playing a crucial part in the future of the EWC.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 27 November 2018.

Leadership Development Provision for Experienced Headteachers

Following the original call for endorsement for provision for New and Acting Headteachers in the summer of 2018, the NAEL has reviewed the process and is now seeking to extend the call for endorsement to include provision for Experienced Headteachers.  This is in addition to our on-going call for provision for New and Acting Headteachers.

This endorsement round will close on 7th December and the outcome will be communicated to providers by 8th February 2019. For more information www.nael.cymru

Consent is required for learners to access Hwb tools

The GDPR has changed the way that Hwb tools are made available to learners – Hwb tools (such as Hwb Classes, Office 365, J2e etc.) are now classed as ‘Additional Services’ and require consent for their use by learners.

Hwb's G Suite for Education is now available

There is now a Google icon in the Hwb Tools ‘waffle’ menu. The icon is set to take you straight into Google Classroom.

A parent and carer’s guide to social media

This guide provides parents and carers practical information on how to help their child/children use social media in a positive way. The guide sets out both the risks and benefits of social media and suggests helpful resources for parents and carers to understand more about social media safety concerns.

Social media, gaming and your child

This set of workshop materials contains all a school needs to run a workshop session on social media and online video gaming for parents and carers. No specialist knowledge is required, as the resource comes complete with guidance notes and instructions for the presenter.

The Daily Mile

The Daily Mile is simple and free and gets children out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom. 

Fishing for Schools (F4S)

Is an initiative run by The Countryside Alliance Foundation (TCAF), It provides free, short angling courses for schools which are suitable for children aged 10-16 years of all educational abilities. The deadline for applications is 9 November 2018.

Caerphilly Castle Ice Rink – special discount on offer for school bookings
