One year old and booming – the Digital Competence Framework

The Digital Competence Framework has been available for almost a full year, during which more support resources have been developed and great work has been undertaken on familiarisation in schools. Some Framework statements have now been refined to respond to practitioner feedback.

In November/December the Cabinet Secretary for Education will be hosting three conferences:

  • 16 November, SSE SWALEC, Cardiff (Central South and EAS)
  • 23 November, Venue Cymru, Llandudno (GwE)
  • 14 December, Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli (ERW)

Headteachers and key education stakeholders are invited.  It will be a further opportunity for Headteachers to engage with Welsh Government on our National Education Reform journey.   Please put the date in your diary, further information will follow shortly.

Amendments to the Foundation Phase Profile for baseline assessments

The Welsh Government, in response to comments received through a survey of practitioners’ views, has made changes to the wording of four skill ladders within the Compact Profile version of the Foundation Phase in order to make them clearer. We encourage those who are undertaking baseline assessments of children at the start of Reception Year to use the revised versions as these are intended to clarify the distinction between different levels of children development.

School Organisation Code Consultation end date – 30 September 2017 

We are currently consulting on revisions to the School Organisation Code. The revisions mainly reflect feedback and learning following 3 years of its operation. It is also proposed to strengthen the Code in respect of a presumption against the closure of rural schools.

Additional Learning Needs Transformation Leads

The Welsh Government is funding the recruitment of five Additional Learning Needs Transformation Leads to support local authorities, schools, early years settings, further education institutions and other delivery partners to prepare for and manage transition to the new ALN system.

All Wales Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for Educational Settings 

Schools should be aware that Public Health Wales has published new guidance on the prevention and control of infection in educational settings. This replaces the ‘Teach Germs a Lesson’ guidance (2006). The quick guide can be read here and the full guidance can be read here

Promoting Equality and Tackling Racism in your School - New Factsheets now available 

Welsh Government and Show Racism the Red Card have produced 4 brief guides to appropriate terminology, equality duties, and identifying and reporting a racist.

A new network for excellence to improve how maths is taught in schools and improve standards has been officially launched NNEM Hwb Zone.

Roald Dahl Day – 13 September 2017

Celebrate Roald Dahl Day by using the Wondercrump World of Roald Dalh resource on Hwb. There are 4 lesson plans for which focus on Roald Dahl’s writing processes and how he was inspired by the world around him. (KS2-3)

ExChange: Care and Education

An online 'Community of Practice' resource hub that aims to provide resources that can help to improve educational experiences and outcomes for children and young people in Wales who are in or are leaving care.

Children’s Commissioner for Wales Student Ambassadors

All primary schools can get involved with the Commissioner’s work to promote the rights of children in Wales with the free Super Ambassador scheme. Pupils have fun opportunities to learn about children’s rights and tell the Commissioner their views.

Languages, Literacy and Communication (LLC) - 2018 IPLC visit to Canada 

Application deadline is Friday 6 October 2017

The 2018 IPLC visit aims to explore innovations in LLC teaching and strategies for developing speaking, listening, reading, writing, and communicating. Welsh Ambulance Services Primary School Campaign ‘Shoctober’ relaunches

Following last year’s success, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust will be visiting primary schools across Wales during October to promote ‘Shoctober’. A campaign which aims to teach junior school children life saving skills. Pupils will learn about CPR, recovery position, defibrillators and how to deal with someone choking.

Please note due to limited spaces, we are no longer accepting any requests for the Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board area (North Wales)
