In November the Cabinet Secretary for Education
will be hosting two conferences – 16 November, SSE Stadium, Cardiff and 22
November, Venue Cymru, Llandudno for Headteachers and key education
stakeholders. It will be a further opportunity for Headteachers to engage
with Welsh Government on our National Education Reform journey. Please
put the date in your diary, further information will follow in September.

A new Curriculum for Wales

200 teachers joined
Consortia, Estyn and Qualifications Wales in Llandudno this week to share
progress, join up the main themes and plan the next steps in development of the
forthcoming Curriculum for Wales. Key sessions included an overview of
progress, the future direction of qualifications reform, schools as learning
organisations, professional learning, development of bilingual resources and
next steps for curriculum development. They were streamed live, but the footage

Six
Areas of Learning and Experience will be central to the new Curriculum
for Wales. Work on the high level design has been underway, and summary
papers describing the thoughts so far feature below. Summary Papers
In September and October 2017, we are
running the first trial for the new onscreen test questions for procedural
numeracy and we are inviting schools to participate.
The National Reading and Numeracy Test results
for 2017 are now available for primary and secondary schools to download along
with a guidance for practitioners which may be helpful to use when discussing
test outcomes with parents/carers. Documents also being made available at the
end of this week are the “Calculating the Learners’ Scores” tables, Pupil
Results Sheet template and age-calculator.
We
have produced a short animation to talk parents/carers through the National
Reading and Numeracy Test reports. A link to the animation is included on the
pupil results sheet, but you may wish to share the link on your
school’s website.
Drive to improve maths in schools launched
A new network for excellence to improve how maths is taught in schools and improve standards has been officially launched (Fri 14th July). NNEM Hwb Zone
Revised
guidance is available here for NQTs commencing their induction period on
or after 1 September 2017.
Schools
should be aware that Public Health Wales has published new guidance on the
prevention and control of infection in educational settings. This replaces the
‘Teach Germs a Lesson’ guidance (2006). The quick guide can be read here and the full guidance can be read here.
It
is a requirement, under Section 5 of the Healthy Eating in Schools (Wales)
Measure 2009, for local authorities to ensure that drinking water is available,
free of charge, on the premises of any maintained school.
Healthy Eating in Maintained Schools was
published to support the introduction of the Measure, and contains practical
information to support the delivery of healthy eating in schools.

You should
have received your ‘Ready to Learn’ packs for children starting Primary School.
The pack includes a leaflet for parents an activity chart for

(DSPs)
In
partnership with Welsh Government, SWGfL will be offering this new half-day
training event for designated senior persons for child protection (DSPs) across
six locations in Wales. Taking place in September and October
this year, these sessions will focus on appropriately managing
online safety issues in your school. Book your place now on the events

New Keeping learners
safe modules: Online safety for practitioners and governors
Two
new training modules in the Keeping learners safe e-learning suite are now
available. These modules focus specifically on how to keep learners safe online. You can find the playlists in the Online Safety Zone

A
new resource – Trust me Cymru – aims to help upper KS2 primary and secondary
teachers educate children and young people to critically evaluate inaccurate
online information, including content that seeks to deliberately influence
their opinions.
4 activities looking at the work of Assembly
Members. Raise awareness of the National Assembly for Wales and to help pupils
draw the link between politics and issues affecting their own lives.

will be helpful to primary schools.

to VAWDASV 2015 legislation. The Spectrum Team work across Wales delivering
free VAWDASV and healthy relationships sessions to students, and are now hoping
to provide free tailored digital resources for all Welsh schools. Please let
