‘Ready to Learn’ packs Packs have been distributed to primary schools, sessional day care providers and nurseries
Produced as
part of a campaign targeting parents and carers, the new Ready to learn packs
have been produced with helpful tips and suggestions on practical things that
can be done at home to develop the necessary skills and help settle in at
school. The pack includes a leaflet for parents an activity chart for
parents and carers to work through with their child.
There’s also
a short animation
and a link gov.wales/readytolearn you can share on your school’s social
media channels.

The National Reading and Numeracy Test results
for 2017 are now available for primary and secondary schools to download along
with a guidance for practitioners which may be helpful to use when discussing
test outcomes with parents/carers. Documents also being made available at the
end of this week are the “Calculating the Learners’ Scores” tables, Pupil
Results Sheet template and age-calculator.
We
have produced a short animation to talk parents/carers through the National
Reading and Numeracy Test reports. A link to the animation is included on the
pupil results sheet, but you may wish to share the link on your
school’s website.
National Tests 2018
The
dates for the 2018 National Tests have been set as follows:
- Secondary
Schools: 25 April – 9 May 2018
- Primary
Schools: 2 – 9 May 2018
- Middle
Schools: 25 April – 9 May 2018

An
independent review of the role of Estyn in supporting education reform has
today been announced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams and
the Chief Inspector, Meilyr Rowlands.
New Keeping learners
safe modules: Online safety for practitioners and governors
These modules focus specifically on how to keep learners safe
online.
Each playlist will provide
all education practitioners and governors with a sound introduction to online
safety. They provide a background
to the safeguarding issues that can occur online and detail some of the apps
and services young people use.

which should take a maximum of 10 minutes to complete.
The story of Hedd Wyn
New
resources are now available on Hwb and gwales.com which tell the story of Welsh
poet, Hedd Wyn. Click on the links below to access these resources!
The
resources were produced by The National Library of Wales and include tasks for
Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils.
Written
to mark the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele and the death of renowned
poet Hedd Wyn on 31 July 1917, this KS 2/3 resource available from Global
Learning Programme-Wales asks why the Great War is called the First World War
and investigates the global extent of the conflict.

This short film highlights how inspections of schools and
work-based learning providers are changing from September.
Have you registered
your defibrillator?
If
your school has a defibrillator, please register it online with the Welsh
Ambulance Service. This will help 999 operators direct callers to the
nearest defibrillator for use whilst the ambulance is on its way. ‘Be a
Defib Hero’ and register yours here before the end of term.
