Food tourism special edition

We know food is an important influence on people’s decision to visit Wales. Visitors take more of an interest in where their food comes from and what happens on its journey to their plate.  Food and tourism are particularly important in Wales.  To ensure a constant supply of fresh, seasonal produce to cater for our discerning visitors’ every taste, it’s crucial that the hospitality and catering industry work closely with local food and drink producers in Wales.

This special edition newsletter focussing on food provides practical advice on how to re-vamp your menus and how to inject some sense of place to help tell the story of Wales.  We’re also sharing examples of best practice in the industry and details of new food related projects we recently supported.

The Food Tourism Action plan 2015 - 2020

Launched in April 2015, this is a joint plan developed between us in Visit Wales and the Food Division.  The overall aim of the plan is to increase Wales’ reputation as a high quality food destination.  The plan clearly sets out actions for the next five years and expected outputs.  We’ll be refreshing the plan next year to ensure that food is integrated into all our forthcoming campaigns and activities.  Download your copy now.

The Welsh breakfast toolkit

Could your breakfast menu do with a bit of a refresh? Do you tell your guests where your bacon is from or where you sourced your sausages?  We’ve put together a handy little toolkit to get you thinking about your breakfast menus and how you can easily incorporate local and Welsh ingredients to ensure your guests can start the day with delicious fresh local produce.  This toolkit includes sample menu templates, alternative breakfast ideas, regional dishes and quick ideas for good on the go breakfasts.  Tell us what your makes your breakfast special, tweet your pictures to us @visitwalesbiz

Food tourism business support

Small changes to how you present your food offer can make the world of difference.  This is a general toolkit to help you improve your customer’s Welsh food and drink experience.  You’ll find a list of popular Welsh and regional dishes as well as hints and tips for describing your dishes to reflect your local region, and some case studies.  There is also a self–audit questionnaire so you can see how well your business tells the story of Welsh food and drink and how you can make some improvements.  Take a look at the menu makeovers and give it a go today.

Year of Adventure 2016 and food

2016 will be the Year of Adventure and now’s the time to think about how you can get involved and how food and drink can be incorporated into activities and packages as part of the Adventure theme.  If you offer accommodation, why not consider linking up with activity providers in your area to offer joint packages? If you run a café or a pub, could you work with other businesses to provide information to guests on adventures and food trails or safaris?  If you offer breakfasts, could you perhaps turn it into a Welsh breakfast for the adventurous?  Activity providers, why not make your food and drink offer part of the Welsh adventure experience?  These are just some ideas to get you thinking, tell us what you’re up on twitter @visitwalesbiz #walesadventure

Eat your way around the north Wales coast

One of the fundamental objectives of the Food Tourism Action plan is to raise Wales’ profile as a high quality food tourism destination.   To achieve this, we need to have quality eating establishments which showcase the very best in contemporary Welsh food and drink.  Our Tourism Investment Support Scheme (TISS) has supported 6 restaurant type projects recently, here’s a summary of each project:

Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay
A 60 cover restaurant and 18 cover ‘wet café’ area, at Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay.  The restaurant is open plan, with the kitchen in the centre, serving both restaurant and cafe customers. £100k support and 14 full time equivalent (FTE) jobs.

Dylan’s Criccieth
New 120 cover restaurant on the beachside at Criccieth with a 40 cover brasserie/cocktail bar, and a stand-alone event/function space to accommodate live music, cinema and theatre evenings, tastings and special celebrations. £140k support and 30 FTE jobs.

Catch 22 Brasserie, Valley, Anglesey
Opening next year, this will be a new 150 cover destination restaurant at Valley, Anglesey to include an extension to the front to accommodate a terraced area on the ground floor and a balcony on the first floor overlooking the patio.  £65k grant creating 29.5 FTE jobs.

Enoteca , Porth Dinorwic
Conversion of an unused  building into a 60 cover authentic Italian Enoteca restaurant on the shores of Menai Straits next to Porth Dinorwic marina. £30k grant creating 8 FTE total cost £286k. Due to open later this month.

Venu, Pwllheli
Conversion of a redundant building into a new destination food and entertainment venue on the waterfront at Pwllheli.  The works involved the comprehensive refurbishment and alterations of the building  into a high quality contemporary restaurant, lounge, dance bar and event venue, with views overlooking the harbour, to cater for over 150 people. £38,250 grant creating 23 FTE jobs and £85k cost.  The bar is now open with the restaurant element to open later this month.

Cardiff on list of fastest growing food and drink scenes in UK

Cardiff has been named one of the top five fastest growing food and drink scenes in the UK according to findings of analysis of food and drink events held across the UK by Eventbrite.  This clearly shows how diverse the food offer is in Cardiff with lots of many new restaurant and cafés opening their doors recently as well as the increase in the popularity of street food and unusual and innovative food events.

Brewery boom

According to Drinks Wales, which represents independent brewers and cider and wine producers, the number of independent brewers in Wales is rising with the number of breweries doubling in the past five years to 88.  Welsh brewers are taking their beers across the UK and looking abroad and at home, 20 small Welsh breweries now have their own pubs. The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) included 14 new Welsh breweries in its annual beer guide last year.  Great news for the Wales drinks industry!
