Object of the Month

The Museum’s ‘Object of the Month’ provides an opportunity to explore interesting and unusual objects from our stores.

January's Object(s) of the month have been selected by Curator Carolyn Wingfield.

They explore the popularity of the hunting theme in Roman Britain through objects showing hare and hounds.

In later times, ‘Hare and Hounds’ became a popular pub name.

Today there are concerns about illegal hare coursing especially in this region. If you see anything suspicious, please contact the Police.

life casting

Life Casting Workshop

Tuesday 31 January

10am-12.30noon

In this basic introduction to life casting, you will create a life cast of your hand using alginate and plaster. It’s a really fun and simple process and you will take away a one of kind cast of your hand with detail so fine you will even be able to see fingerprints!  All materials plus light refreshments will be provided.

Life casting the process of creating a three-dimensional copy of the living human body, using moulding and casting techniques. The standout feature of life casts is their high level of realism and detail. Life casts can replicate details as small as fingerprints and pores.

*The mould created during the session is only suitable for single use, you will not be able to bring home to do multiple casts. This is due to the nature of life casting and its moulding material.

Spaces are limited to a small group so book now online here  to avoid disappointment: https://saffron-walden-museum.arttickets.org.uk/saffron-walden-museum/2023-01-31-life-casting-workshop

winstanley shopping

Thank you!

Winstanley Late Night Christmas Shopping

Thank you to everyone who visited our stall at the Late Night Christmas shopping event on Friday 2 December.

The Saffron Walden Initiative organised this event and took inspiration from local man William Winstanley, a celebrated 17th-century author who revived Christmas traditions after the austere years of the Commonwealth.

On the stall Carolyn and the Museum Society committee, staff and volunteers helping had a mini display about William Winstanley, some Museum souvenirs and gift ideas and some great ‘mystery objects’ to guess!
