Changes to bin collections this Christmas

For Christmas week (w/c 20 December) we will be collecting your black-lidded waste bin and brown food waste caddy although please note that all collections will take place a day earlier than usual – see table below for your revised collection date.

Please note that we will not be collecting any bins in the week following Christmas (28 to 31 December).

Collections will return to normal from Tuesday 4 January 2022 when we will be collecting your green recycling bin and brown food waste caddy.

If you have extra recycling, you can leave it beside your bin for collection. Please put your recycling in white or clear bags, or cardboard boxes. We cannot collect any recycling if it is in black bags.

Christmas and New Year opening hours

Check Uttlesford District Council's opening and closing times over the Christmas and New Year period.

This includes details of the out of hours service which is for repairs to council properties and emergencies only.


New Leader at UDC

Cllr Lees has been elected as the new Leader of Uttlesford District Council.

Cllr Lees replaces Cllr Lodge who has stepped down from the role. 

Following Cllr Lees' appointment, there have been some changes to the council's Cabinet.

Voluntary sector grants

Voluntary and charitable organisations in Uttlesford can apply for funding to help with the costs of providing essential services to local communities.

The grant is for revenue expenditure only and cannot be used towards capital projects such as refurbishment of buildings.

The closing date for applications is 21 January 2022.

Household Support Fund

As part of the nationwide efforts to recover following the pandemic, Essex County Council has been provided with some funding from the government's Household Support Fund.

This funding will be used to help people with food, fuel and other household costs this winter.

The fund has been distributed to local organisations who know their areas best and can directly help those in need. You should contact one of these organisations to get support.

Council for Voluntary Services Uttlesford

The Community Hubs were set up as part of the response to the pandemic.

The hub for our district is the Council for Voluntary Services Uttlesford.

If you are in need this winter you can contact the local hub to get help with food, fuel and essential items.

Citizens' Advice

Citizens' Advice can provide advice on winter warmth and issue fuel vouchers to those in need. They can also provide information on other support services.

If you use oil or Calor Gas, Uttlesford Citizens Advice can organise a delivery for you.

Other organisations

Find a full list of the organisations who can provide you with support.

You do not need to be claiming benefits. Whatever your circumstances, if you are struggling this winter you can get help with your essential costs.


Knife amnesty bin locations

The Uttlesford Community Safety Partnership will be taking a knife amnesty bin to:

  • Clavering on Monday 13 December outside the village shop from 12.30pm to 1.30pm
  • Debden on Monday 13 December outside the village shop from 2pm to 3pm.

This is part of a nationwide initiative, and is for any residents who want to dispose safely of any unwanted bladed articles and weapons.

Combat catalytic converter theft

The Uttlesford Community Safety Partnership is hosting another catalytic convertor marking session following a successful first event in October.

The marking event is on Sunday 16 January 2022, from 10am to 2pm, at Tread First, Shire Hill, Saffron Walden.

You must book to attend this event. Once confirmed, you will receive an e-ticket to show on the day as time slots and kits are limited.

Castle turns green

Walden Castle is one of a number of buildings across Essex being lit up green as part of a countywide campaign.

Creating Hope Through Light aims to help prevent suicide and reduce the stigma around talking about suicide, as well as raising awareness of suicide prevention training.

The new Let's talk about suicide Essex website offers free suicide prevention training, highlighting how to spot the signs of someone who may be in crisis and where to signpost for support.


Is someone you love living with dementia?

A new dementia support pack is available for the residents of Uttlesford. It includes information about current dementia friendly groups which are taking place in the district as well as useful numbers.

If you would like a support pack, please email UDC's Health Improvement Officer.

Dementia Connect, Alzheimer's Society's dementia support service, is free, easy to access, and puts you in touch with the right support. Advisers can support you directly by phone or face to face, as well as connect you to a range of local services.

If you are wondering what to do with your old one, the Uttlesford Citizens Advice has a number of clients who are struggling without telephone access, so please consider donating them.

You can drop off at the Citizens Advice office in Barnards Yard, Saffron Walden between 9.30am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, or give them a call on 01799 618840.
