10 by 10 A focus on SEND
We are committed to ensuring that children with SEND can fully participate in 10 by 10.
There are a diverse range of activities accessible to all primary school children in the borough - regardless of their family, cultural or health background. And we are working with parents, schools and community partners to develop new accessible activities and offers.
But here are a few existing activities that we wanted to highlight.
Four spotlight activities accessible for children and young people with SEND in Telford and Wrekin
Swimming
Public swimming sessions are open to all children with SEND and their families with the availability of hoists and changing facilities at all leisure centres.
Free swimming lessons are available to children including those with SEND who who live in Telford and Wrekin and are:
- between five and ten years of age
- unable to swim ten meters on their front and back
- not currently enrolled on the Swim4Life programme (stage one or above).
Children with SEND can access mainstream lessons but assessments are in place to ensure needs are met on a case by case basis.
Please call your local leisure centre and indicate that you have special requirements when booking swimming lessons. Where appropriate children can be enrolled in bespoke SEND swimming lessons, provided by trained specialists.
Ice Skating
The rink is open to wheel chair users and there are adapted skates for hire. The use equipment is free of charge, and carers who are supporting learners with disabilities can skate for free.
The Ice Rink's large soft play area is available on Sunday's 10.00 - 11.30 for children with SEND under 16.
The Special Needs Activity Centre (SNAC) Telford
SNAC Telford run various events and sessions at The Pavillion in Hollinswood.
They accommodate for babies with special needs, children and adults, giving them a space to play learn while the parents and carers have a place to relax and socialise.
Silhouette Dance Club
Children with SEND can also access commercial clubs and classes.
One example is Silhouette Dance Club. They offer a bespoke Chance to Dance class for children aged 5+, as well as enjoying music and dance, the classes focus on developing balance, coordination and rhythm.
Silhouette Dance Club also works with Randlay parish council to support their SEND offer at the SNAC, Special Needs Activity Centre.
