Weekly Update from the Leader

Welcome to my weekly update

I had the pleasure of visiting Rushmoor Stud this week, a business located out in Bratton - one of our rural communities.

It was fantastic to learn about how the business has set up their equestrian centre which will see visitors from all over the country, as well as offering different kinds of job opportunities to residents.

The contrast of businesses in our borough is so unique– we are proud to be the birthplace of industry but 70% of our borough is rural and this visit was as a fantastic reminder of the different types businesses which operate in Telford and Wrekin.  I look forward to following their journey!

Earlier this week I held a ‘meet Shaun’ event online on Facebook Live, where I answered questions about a range of topics that were sent in, including sustainable travel, improving public transport, new homes and the need for extra schooling and access to GPs that these new developments bring. If you missed it, you can watch it again on our Facebook page.

I’m looking forward to joining Jim Hawkins in BBC Shropshire’s hot seat on Monday– this will be my first time back in the studio in over two years!  I’ll be discussing some recent hot topics around our plans plans to freeze general council tax for two years and how we can afford to do this – plus other important issues around our hospitals. I hope you can tune in then.

Residents back plans for general council tax freeze

council tax

Residents across the borough have thrown their support behind our plans to freeze the general level of council tax for the next two years.

The budget proposals, which include plans to freeze general council tax for the next two years, were first announced in January. Since then a four-week public consultation period has been held, with 94% of feedback in favour of the proposals.

At their meeting on Thursday this week, Cabinet reviewed this feedback and agreed to recommend the budget proposals for final approval at the Full Council meeting on Thursday 3 March.

Boulton Butchers

We’re delighted to see a huge gap on the Madeley high street filled with the opening of Boulton’s Artisan Butchery Ltd.

The butchers is a welcome addition to the town, thanks to a £10,000 business start-up grant from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our High Street programme, and becomes the first butchers in Madeley for 15 years.

Remember to shop local and support local businesses on your high street.

Supporting our residents with continued rising energy costs

Affordable warmth

We are continuing to support our residents who face significant increases to their gas and electricity bills from April, particularly those who are already struggling to deal with the rising cost of living.

Support measures include financial assistance through top-ups to existing energy grants and helping households to access information and advice on a range of energy efficiency measures.

We’ve invested £40,000 of capital funding over the winter months to support energy grant top-ups, and over the last 12 months we’ve won funding of over £2 million to deliver energy efficiency measures to those hardest hit in our borough by rising costs.
