Life Ready Work Ready

December Update

A Message from Sue Marston

Skills Service Delivery Manager

Welcome to our December Life Ready Work Ready newsletter.

I am sure you are all looking forward to some well deserved rest time over the Christmas period.

As always, this term has flown by and I want to thank you for all your hard work in schools and for continuing with your great work with careers and work experience.

Also, a massive thank you to all our employers who have engaged with us, our schools and colleges in getting involved in events and activities for our young people - you really do make such a difference and can change and influence career decisions. THANK YOU.

In the new year we will be planning a week of activities for National Apprenticeship Week on 7–11 February 2022 and National Careers Week 7-12 March 2022.

Please pop these dates in your diaries and get in touch with the Life Ready Work Ready team if you would like to get involved.

Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and THANK YOU again for all your support with Life Ready Work Ready in 2021.

Best wishes

Sue

National Careers Week

During National Careers week (7-11 March 2022), we will be placing a spotlight on local employers within our key labour market sectors.

  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality
  • ICT
  • Engineering
  • Construction

We plan to host virtual sessions which explore the vast range of roles and skills required within each sector.

There will be testimonials from existing employees, along with information from local education providers about the courses they offer to support entering the specified sectors.

Resources will be created which are linked to each sector and core theme to ensure that these virtual sessions are meaningful.

The opportunity to pose questions will go out to all employers in the run up to the events to ensure those participating in delivering the information can answer them during the pre-recorded videos.

If you would like to participate please contact: Lifereadyworkready@telford.gov.uk

During National Apprenticeship Week (7-11 February 2022) we will be hosting sector focused insight sessions based on the local labour market.

The week will be broken down into the following sectors: Construction, Engineering, Health Care, Hospitality & ICT.

Each day will provide a range of local employer videos exploring local opportunities within these sectors and information from local colleges and training providers about the courses on offer which support the linked industry apprenticeships.

If you are an employer of one of the associated sectors and would like to get involved, please get in touch with the Life Ready Work Ready Team:

Case Study - Year 10 Mock Interviews

The Life Ready Work Ready Team and representatives from the Navy, Prince Personnel, SG Business Consultancy and West Midlands Fire and Rescue visited Idsall School in Shifnal to take part in Year 10 mock interviews.

Each representative interviewed willing students from 8 different tutor groups. All students engaged well and did an excellent job in answering the questions.

The remaining students in the class acted as an interview panel providing peer reviews to each interview candidate, discussed the best answers and also what could have been improved upon.

We would like thank the staff at Idsall for the hospitality and the Careers Lead, Lucy Kendall, for persisting with providing a meaningful careers programme for the students of Idsall school.

We would also like to thank the representatives who volunteered their time to support this event.

Your input and support is invaluable and we look forward to working with you and other representatives again soon.

Our next Mock interview event will take place in early January at Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury and we would appreciate any help to support this.

Testimonials

"At first I thought it was very nerve wracking but there was a great energy in the room. After a while I found it quite calming and it was very useful. I hope I can use the experience for my future interviews as it was very insightful and just a great experience. I recommend anyone to do it as it will help you too."

Harvey

‘I found it really insightful. I was very nervous but the interviewer made it really calm and really comfortable and I had a great time, it will really help me in the future’.

Maia

"The event was brilliant, both students and staff thought the interviewers were excellent and the response from students was superb. Meeting volunteers from real businesses has made such a difference and has really helped students to see the value of the sessions they have been doing this term. It was a great opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zone and challenge themselves. The feedback they were given was brilliant too and I’m confident that all students, observers and interviewees will be able to use what they have learned in their future interviews. Thank you for helping to arrange such an excellent event."
