Bin day changes over Christmas & New Year

Christmas bin collections reminder 2020

We're reminding everyone to check their bin collection calendar for the Christmas and New Year period to avoid getting caught out and missing their collection.

With earlier and later collection day changes that start from Saturday 19 December, our waste contractor Veolia is delivering a reminder leaflet to households across the borough to remind them of the day changes over the festive period.

Green bins will be collected over Christmas, and you can recycle your real Christmas tree in the green bin – just cut it down so it fits inside. For every real Christmas tree recycled in green bins or taken to recycling centres, Veolia will make a donation to local charity Stay to support homeless and vulnerable people.

Collections will be back to normal on Monday 11 January 2021

Having a clear out?

If you’re having a clear out before Christmas and need to visit our recycling centres, you can speed up your visit by sorting your boot before you set off and checking our site maps so you can offload items as you make your way around the site. We are expecting them to be busy, so please be patient and kind.

Recycling tips

  • We all have lots more cardboard to recycle at this time of year, and sometimes it won’t all fit in our blue bags. Fit in what you can, or break it down and place under your blue bag to keep it dry and stop it blowing away
  • Still not bought your Christmas wrapping paper? Remember, foil, glitter or metallic wrapping paper can’t be recycled. You can save and reuse or place in your red top bin to be turned into energy
  • If you're getting through lots of batteries with your Christmas lights and new toys, please remember to recycle them safely. Put them in a clear plastic bag and pop them on the lid of your purple wheelie bin. Please do not dispose of them in your containers where then can cause fires
  • If your outdoor food caddy is heaving with veg peelings, don't worry, you can present your kitchen caddy at the kerbside along with your outdoor caddy to help you recycle as much as you can - this additional service is from 28 December to 9 January
