Community News - Funding

We know that many community organisations have either been effected by current restrictions or have leapt into action to support communities so we thought the following grants might be of interest to you.

They both seek to lessen the impact of Covid-19.

There is also a further opportunity aimed at young people who are working to seek positive change in the face of injustice.

Comic Relief

Covid-19 Community Support Fund - Now open

Comic Relief have released their own Covid-19 Community Support Fund which will support local grassroots organisations recover after the initial Covid-19 emergency.  Administered by Groundwork it will award grants of £4,000. The programme is designed to provide a grant for immediate short term recovery purposes rather than fund a specific project. There is also a Capacity Building Grant of £1,000 available.

As per the main grant programme the funds will still support the four main themes as set out by Comic Relief.

  • Children Survive & Thrive: projects that support children under the age of 5 to reach their potential and have the best start in life.
  • Fighting for Gender Justice: projects that improve equality for women, girls and initiatives that help people affected by domestic violence, abuse or exploitation due to their gender.
  • A Safe Place to Be: projects that support people who are rebuilding their lives because of homelessness or forced migration.
  • Mental Health Matters: projects that support good mental health in communities, improve access to support and tackle stigma and discrimination.

The fund has the following objectives:

  1. To support grass roots organisations to respond to the needs of vulnerable individuals, families and communities during the Covid-19 crisis
  2. To support local grass roots community led organisations with ‘lived in’ experience to recover and develop organisational resilience following the Covid-19 crisis

They are particularly interested in receiving applications from charities who support BAME and LGBTQ communities, who have been disproportionally affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

Covid-19 Community Support Fund

Capacity Building Grant

British Red Cross Hardship Fund

At the start of the Covid-19 outbreak, Aviva and the Aviva Foundation donated £10 million to the British Red Cross to support people most at risk. Half of this, £5 million, is being used for the Hardship Fund to give cash grants to the poorest people facing financial problems because of the pandemic. These may be families living below the poverty line, those fleeing domestic violence, people seeking asylum or homeless people staying in temporary accommodation.

People referred to the Hardship Fund for support get special cash cards preloaded with either a one-off payment of £120 or a grant of £120 each month for three months. The cards can be used online or in shops, or people can withdraw up to £35 from a cash machine. Since people need to be referred to the Hardship Fund, the first step for those facing financial problems because of Covid-19, or for people supporting others with money issues, is to contact the British Red Cross Coronavirus support line on 0808 196 3651 for information on where to get financial help.
