Paper Tigers Coming to The Orbit

Paper Tigers Film Poster

More than two decades ago, two respected researchers, clinical physician Dr. Vincent Felitti and CDC epidemiologist Robert Anda, published the game-changing Adverse Childhood Experiences Study.

It revealed a troubling but irrefutable phenomenon: the more traumatic experiences the respondents had as children (such as physical and emotional abuse and neglect), the more likely they were to develop health problems later in life—problems such as cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

To complicate matters, there was also a troubling correlation between adverse childhood experiences and prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse, unprotected sex, and poor diet. Combined, the results of the study painted a staggering portrait of the price our children are paying for growing up in unsafe environments, all the while adding fuel to the fire of some of society’s greatest challenges.

However, this very same study contains the seed of hope: all of the above-mentioned risk factors—behavioural as well as physiological—can be offset by the presence of one dependable and caring adult. It doesn’t need to be the mother or the father. It doesn’t even need to be a close or distant relative.

More often than not, that stable, caring adult is a teacher.

Paper Tigers is due to screen at The Orbit, Wednesday, November 20 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are £8, you can pop in or order on the www.wellingtonorbit.co.uk

Get Telford Walking (GTW) is back for 2020 with the aim of supporting local people to ‘get active outdoors’ and walking to benefit health & wellbeing.  Driven by the Friends of Telford T50 50 Mile Trail, the group are looking for interested partners to support local short walks which will take place on Sunday 24 May 2020.

Volunteering Opportunities

ReadEasy - Literacy Specialist

readeasy logo

More than 7% of adults in England never learnt to read at school.

As a result, they struggle to do some of the everyday things that most of us take for granted. Yet many people with reading difficulties are too embarrassed to seek help if it means joining a class.

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to one coaching from trained volunteers for anyone who struggles with reading.

For more information please see the Read Easy website – www.readeasy.org.uk

The local Read Easy group still in its infancy are looking for a Literacy Specialist to support its establishment alongsdide many of its other volunteering roles.

Literacy Specilist role

A very important and rewarding role within the group. You would provide support with literacy issues to the Coordinator and reading coaches and assist in running coach meetings.

The person who takes on this role should have a background in teaching reading/literacy (preferably, but not necessarily with adults).

If you are interested you should be willing to attend meetings and undertake further reading and/or training if necessary, in order to be able to fulfil the role effectively.

To get involved in the group or find out more about the Literacy Specialist role email telford@readeasy.org.uk or ring Claire Dempsey on 07941 515220.

Bounce & Rhyme Volunteer

Five Little ducks

As a Bounce & Rhyme volunteer you would be leading our singing and rhymes sessions for the under 5s with their parents and carers.

If you know your Humpty Dumpty from your 5 Little Ducks, you could be just the person we're looking for.

We have opportunities at Southwater, Wellington, Madeley, Newport and Oakengates Libraries.

This is an opportunity to make a difference in somebody’s day.

Find out more and apply at www.telford.gov.uk/libraries
