Volunteering is a brilliant way to meet people, make new friends, get some fresh air and exercise and perhaps learn new skills.
Alan Boney of Shrewsbury and Newport Canal restoration Trust explains what they do;
I am a trustee and fundraiser with the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust. Run entirely by volunteers, we are in the process of restoring a canal basin and 2 x grade 2 listed former canal warehouses at Wappenshall in the north of Telford, TF6 6DE.
We have loads of volunteers, some from qualified trades, carpenters, bricklayers and the like. We also many; like me; who have no particular skill but like to be involved and quite likely become passionate about the whole subject.
On the 3rd Saturday of every month we have a general open day for anyone to come and look around to see what we are up to. Many visitors have turned into volunteers, who carry out a variety of work, from cutting the grass to repairing the roof.
We are currently classed as a building site and so safety items are needed. We can supply hard hats, gloves and hi vis wear. However, you are can wear your own if you already have such. Toe cap shoes and boots are also needed.
You might be quite surprised to know that our group have already received the Queens Award for Volunteer Service, the equivalent of an MBE for an individual.
Come and have a look, there are so many ways to volunteer. If you don't fancy the physical stuff no problem, you could become part of a fundraising team, or someone to support a show stand and tell the public all about us, (don't worry we don't leave you on your own), so many possibilities.
If you want to come and see what it's all about remember 3rd Saturday of each month, next dates are; 17 August, 21 September, 19 October and 16 November We are such a friendly bunch, bring a sense of humour and your lunch. We have tea and coffee provided. Thanks very much, I hope that you can use this and help us to get better known by the community. We are growing as the number of volunteers we already have illustrates. Alan Boney Trustee and Fundraiser. Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust

 In 2019 the Royal British Legion is asking the nation to Remember Together.
To remember not only the British Armed Forces and their families who have served and sacrificed, but also those from the Commonwealth and Allied nations who stood shoulder to shoulder with Britain.
Together, Britain and our allies came through those difficult times, securing our freedoms and defending our values and way of life.
In the year of the 75 anniversaries of three pivotal Second World War battles; Monte Cassino, D-Day, and Kohima and Imphal, we remember the collaboration between peoples and nations that made victory possible. We
We would very much like to start some conversations across the West Midlands as to how the different communities can Remember Together, drawing on the experiences of the past and the hopes for the future.
We would therefore be delighted if you are able to join us on
Thursday 22 August 2019, 15:00 – 17:00 At the Royal British Legion Pop In Centre, 87 New Street, Birmingham B2 4BA
For a short presentation and an open discussion on our, and your, plans to bring this to life in our Region.
We will provide light refreshments and hope that you are able to join us.
Please RSVP by Monday 19 August to westmidlands@britishlegion.org.uk
