'I can be' campaign LBTH

Tower Hamlets launches its ‘I can be’ campaign

‘I can be’ is a campaign to inspire a new generation of community leaders by following in the footsteps of established community champions.

The emphasis is on Black, Asian and Multi-Ethnic (BAME) residents being the change they want to see. Influencing decision-making by becoming a community leader by:

  • participating in voluntary roles such as applying to be a magistrate
  • school governor
  • being a health scrutiny lead
  • police community support officer
  • representing on boards that can influence decisions (as these roles are under-represented within the BAME community).

The 'I can be' campaign is part of the council’s approach to tackling race inequality in the borough. It has been designed to encourage and promote community leadership amongst our Black Asian and Multi Ethnic residents. The campaign focuses on working with local leaders as 'I can be campaign champions' to inspire our BAME residents to take up a community leadership role.

Have you heard of Leaders in Community?

Leaders in Community is a youth-led charity run by a group of active local young people from Tower Hamlets. Set up in 2009 by a group of young adults who wanted to improve their local services.

Help Tower Hamlets improve communication with young people flyer

Help Tower Hamlets improve communication with young people

As you may be aware Tower Hamlets Council are trying to improve how our services communicate with young people.

We want young people to tell us what kind of platforms, messaging, formats and media work best for them and within different contexts. The borough ran a consultation workshop over the summer and has also produced a short survey.

Please could you encourage all young people you know to take part in the survey.  (which also enters them into a voucher prize draw)

The image above is an e-flyer with a QR link embedded (you may need to zoom in), so that young people can scan and complete the survey. The findings will be shared with all services in Tower Hamlets so that we can all collectively improve our comms to young people.

Please share widely!

Save the Children – Youth Advisory Board Member advert

Save the Children – Youth Advisory Board Member volunteering opportunities

Save the Children are looking for youth advisors to join their Youth Advisory Board. Young people will be able to express their ideas and work together to help shape projects across Save the Children’s work in the UK. They will have the choice to take part in a range of unique experiences too. In the past, youth advisors have attended meetings with politicians, delivered speeches at events, engaged with media and featured in Save the Children campaign videos.

To maintain the diversity of their board and to make sure they are representing young people fairly, the board will be made up of a range of people from different backgrounds and experiences.

You can apply if you:

  • Are aged 12-16
  • Live in the UK. They particularly encourage you to apply if you live in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, and North of England
  • They are particularly keen to receive applications from young people from working class and/or low-income backgrounds, as well as young people who are LGBTQ+, disabled, young people of colour, young carers, and refugees.

Please note: Unfortunately, you’re not able to apply if:

  • You are already a member of a youth board for a large national charity
  • You are related to a current member of the Youth Advisory Board
  • One of your parents or close family members works for Save the Children or sits on the Board of Trustees
