What have we been up to?

Welcome to the Summer Special 2024 edition of the Young WorkPath E-newsletter.

As we approach the end of this academic year, our team of Careers Advisers have been conducting their final career guidance interviews with students. Additionally, Careers Advisers have participated in various events, including a Year 12 next steps session at Swanlea School, the Langdon Park School Careers Fair, and a Year 10 assembly at Mulberry School for Girls Careers Industry Week. Meanwhile, our Brokerage and Tracking Advisers have been helping NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) young people move into education, employment, and training opportunities.

We will be open throughout the summer continuing to provide careers interviews face to face, over the phone and by video for NEET young people and school/college leavers. Please encourage young people who are unsure of what they want to do or how to achieve their career aims to have a chat with us. We are happy to help. You can contact us at youngworkpath@towerhamlets.gov.uk or on 0800 3581 2410 (free phone) or 0207 364 1401

Free, creative Saturday Clubs for 13–16 year olds

The National Saturday Club picture

In London and across the UK, the National Saturday Club gives 13–16-year-olds the opportunity to study subjects they love for free at their local university, college or cultural institution. It provides a unique chance for young people to build their skills, develop their confidence, and discover pathways to further study and future careers.

Saturday Clubs are currently offered in eight subjects: Art&Design, Craft&Making, Fashion&Business, Film&Screen, Performance&Theatre, Society&Change, Science&Engineering and Writing&Talking.

In Tower Hamlets, there are two Saturday Clubs – Istituto Marangoni Fashion&Business Saturday Club and London Metropolitan University Art&Design Saturday Club. You can also reach a wide range of other subjects in different Clubs across London.

Club members attend weekly Saturday classes led by expert tutors in their local community, and take part in national events throughout the year including visits to leading cultural institutions, Masterclasses with industry, a Summer Show exhibition of all Club members’ work at London’s prestigious Somerset House, and a Graduation Ceremony. A remarkable national network of further education, higher education, the cultural sector and industry works together in partnership to deliver these enriching extracurricular activities.

September Guarantee

Every year, we undertake the huge task of finding out what education or training offers are made to year 11 and 12 pupils for September coming. This is something the Department for Education (DfE) requires us to do. We would be grateful if schools and colleges could get this information to us as soon as possible. Please send data to Cheryl Toms, Team Leader Brokerage and Tracking at cheryl.toms@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Schools' statutory responsibility for providing IAG to pupils

Every school must ensure that pupils are provided with independent careers guidance from year 7 - 13. To support schools with their legal duties, additional services can be purchased from Young WorkPath. You can discuss your needs with your link Careers Adviser or contact Mario Kyriacou, Team Leader (Education and NEET Prevention) on 0207 364 1422 or at Mario.Kyriacou@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Please let us know if you wish to buy any services as soon as possible.

Wellbeing support

This can be a difficult time of year for young people but there is a range of support available here.

Next steps for young people

Circles with words about different options

There are various options that young people could progress onto.

Raising the participation age (RPA)

Raising the participation age means after Year 11 school leavers must continue in education or training until 18, read more here. It does not mean staying in school and young people can choose one of the following options:

• Full-time education, such as sixth form or college.
• Work-based learning, such as an apprenticeship.
• Spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training.

GCSE English and Maths

Whatever option is chosen, if after Year 11 school leavers do not have a grade 4 (formerly C) in maths and/or English, they must keep studying these subjects until they achieve a minimum GCSE grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2 (this applies until their 18th birthday).

Post-16 providers

There are still some places available at various sixth forms, colleges and other providers. There are also virtual and in-person events, such as open days and tours. For details, check the website or social media accounts of the relevant provider/s and you can find a list of providers in the Progressing to Post-16 in Tower Hamlets in 2024 booklet and on our webpage. Some enrolment information is now available and applicants should check and if necessary respond to correspondence.

Applications to start in 2025 have opened or will be opening soon.

Post-18 UCAS university clearing now open

If pupils do not have a place or have not applied to university for this year, they will need to apply through Clearing, which is open until 21 October. For those living in England there are over 20,000 courses from over 300 providers. Find out further information on the UCAS website.

Free careers resources and support

Here are some organisations that provide information, advice and guidance on a range of careers, options and next steps. There are also short quizzes if young people aren’t sure what career or next step, they are interested in.

If students in school or college need help, please encourage them to talk to their Careers Co-ordinator/Lead. For young people who are not in education, employment and/or training, they can continue to receive support from Young WorkPath.
