Open House Festival: The Brady Past and Present

Open House Festival in Tower Hamlets

The Brady Arts and Community Centre is joining other Tower Hamlets venues for this year’s Open House Festival, an annual celebration of London’s buildings, architecture, and neighbourhoods. The building has a fascinating history.  It opened in 1935 and was specifically designed as a youth club for Jewish young people. It retains many original architectural features and remains at the heart of the community.

Free activities at the open day on 16 September will highlight the life of the building and give a taste of what’s on offer at the centre.

  • Drop in family art workshop, drawing and painting classes and dancing, singing and storytelling workshops in the Theatre space
  • Bangladeshi textiles exhibition Rhythm of Life Festival and the Brady Archive Photographic exhibition
  • Screenings of the Brady Boys Club documentary, ‘The Battle of Brick Lane’ and ‘Moving Language Forward'.
  • Sister Circle, Theatre Company Outside Edge and our Stonecarving tutor showcase services available at the Centre.

Café Bite will be open throughout the day. No booking, but space is limited. First come first served so put The Brady Arts Centre on your Open House tour of venues in Tower Hamlets.

Pan~ // Catwalk

Theatre: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

A play focusing on an eclectic group of six young hopefuls during the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! Come along to find out who...

Presented by Geoids Musical Theatre; a dynamic central London amateur theatre company who perform exciting and entertaining musical theatre.

Everything is Different, Nothing has Changed

Everything is Different, Nothing has Changed

The first ever exhibition of sound art inspired by the amazing collections of oral history and archival audio held at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives.

Dating back to 1962 and held on fragile cassettes and open reel audiotape, these recordings offer us tantalising fragments of the sonic past. In this installation, the audio collections held at Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives are revisited by three sound artists - Alastair Levy, Emily Peasgood and Syma Tariq.

Produced in collaboration with researchers at Queen Mary, University of London and Birkbeck, University of London, who have been exploring what the East End meant to generations of migrants, Everything is Different, Nothing has Changed uses archival audio to offer new interpretations of Tower Hamlets’ past, focussing particularly on the experiences of Jewish and Bengali/Bangladeshi migrants living here during the twentieth century. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of free events and activities.
