This is the FAMILIES newsletter from The Healthy Lives Team. Each Friday we share relevant information, activities and resources to support your ongoing health and wellbeing.

The HEALTHY LIVES TEAM supports schools, pupils and families with everything to do with health and wellbeing. We want to help you to live fitter, healthier and happier lives.

Children’s Mental Health Week, 6-12 February 2023 – Place2Be Resources for Families

Children’s Mental Health Week will take place from 6-12 February 2023. This year’s theme is Let’s Connect. Place2be’s website says, “when we have healthy connections – to family, friends and others, this can support our mental health and our sense of wellbeing…and as parents and carers you play an important role in your child’s mental health.” Check out Place2be’s free mental health resources for families by clicking the link below:

Resistance Bands

Women’s Move and Stretch Classes -Wednesday's at Bow Community Hub

A women’s only Move and Stretch programme is being delivered at Bow Community Hub on Wednesdays. The session is open to women aged 18 and over from diverse ethnic backgrounds living, working and studying in Tower Hamlets. Sessions will improve fitness and activity levels at the weekly in-person group exercise class, led by qualified fitness instructor Laura Williams.

Cost – Free - online registration and Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) Form is required for enrolment and you will need to email Laura Williams before attending.

Skating in Tower Hamlets this Half Term poster

Get Your Skates On!

This Half Term Bethnal Green Gardens will see the return of the ‘Get Your Skates On’ event, which will include a range of free activities for all the family. This will include games, face painting, sports and physical activity, arts and crafts and synthetic ice skating! There is no need to book, just turn up! This event is organised by Tower Hamlets Sports and Physical Activity Team, Children and Family Centres, and Parks and Open Spaces teams.

Male hands gardening

Free Men’s Gardening for Wellbeing Group

Mudchute Farm and East London NHS Foundation Trust run a free men's gardening for wellbeing group, which is aimed at Bengali and Somali speaking men only. They have a purpose-built gardening space, which provides lots of opportunities to enjoy nature and to practice your gardening skills, with support from their trained gardening professionals.

When: Wednesdays 11:00am – 1pm

Disability Multi-Sports Club - Mile End Park Leisure Centre

The Community Sports Club in Tower Hamlets is a multi-Sports Club open to disabled children aged 8-16.  All disabilities and impairments are welcome. Sessions are designed to help young people get fitter, socialise and have fun! The coach is highly motivated and experienced in a range of sports. Local community groups are welcome to bring as many members as they wish to the session. Siblings are welcome too! Featured sports including basketball and boccia, plus specialist taster sessions such as boxing, dance, golf and much more!

Healthy Start

Healthy Start Card

Healthy Start helps families claiming certain benefits to buy healthy food and milk from the 10th week of pregnancy until the child’s 4th birthday. If you are under 18 and pregnant, you are automatically eligible, regardless of your benefit status.

You are sent a Healthy Start card with money on it that you can use in supermarkets and other grocery stores to buy healthy food, milk or first infant formula. The card is topped up every 4 weeks.

In Tower Hamlets, all children under the age of 4 and all pregnant and breastfeeding women and up to 1 year post-natal are eligible for free Healthy Start vitamins. These can be collected from all Children and Family Centres. You must bring your Heathy Start card if you have one or when you get one. Use your location to find your nearest one.

You can apply for Healthy Start Card:

Online by visiting the NHS Healthy Start website if you are

  • On Universal Credit and Household’s monthly ‘take home pay’ is £408 from employment
  • Receiving Child Tax Credit and household annual income is less than £16190
  • Receiving Child Tax Credit and child(ren) under the age of 4

Over the phone by calling 0300 330 7010 or by emailing healthy.start@nhsba.nhs.uk  if you are:

  • Pregnant and under 18 (not on benefits)
  • Receiving Child Tax Credit and child(ren) over the age of 4
  • Receiving Income Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Receiving Income-based Jobseeker’s allowance
  • Receiving Pension Credit (including Child Addition)
  • Receiving Working Tax Credit run-on
