Mayor Rahman meets brave men from Bentworth Court fire

The flat fire, thought to be from a 'gas explosion' caused a 'whole wall to be blown out'. Shocked residents and neighbours saw the eight-storey block of flats in Tower Hamlets with thick dark smoke billowing into the air. Three young men ran into the burning building to bang on doors in a bid to save residents.

The three young men met with the Mayor at Mulberry Place on Thursday. The Mayor said: “It was an absolute privilege to meet these young men from Coffee Afrique, who rescued residents from the Bentworth Court fire last week. Their bravery and altruism represents the very best of us, and all of Tower Hamlets is proud of them!”

New £1m Emergency Energy Fund to help households

A new £1million Emergency Energy Fund is being set up by the council as part of ongoing support for residents during the cost-of-living crisis. The Energy Fund complements the recently introduced £2.7m cost of living package announced by Mayor Rahman last month.

Grants of up to £100 will be available for households shown through council data to be at the most severe risk of being unable to pay their fuel bills. Around £200,000 has already been earmarked for pensioners, and eligible residents will receive further details by the end of September.

Mayor welcomes families into new Stepney council homes

Local families living with disabilities have spoken with delight about the difference their newly built council homes are making to their lives during a visit by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets. The five, three-bedroom homes in Sidney Street, Stepney Green, were built on the site of an underused library building.

Lutfur Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets said: “The housing crisis is the greatest issue facing Tower Hamlets today. There is an acute shortage of social homes and too many residents live in overcrowded homes. I am committed to delivering homes for the future with rents residents can afford and have set an ambitious target to build 1,000 social homes a year in Tower Hamlets.”

Don't forget to respond to our 'Call for Sites' survey

A Call for Sites is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to let the council know about land or buildings in the borough which could be developed. The land could be developed further as part of its existing use or developed to change how it is used. You do not need to own a site to submit it as part of the Call for Sites. The Plan Making team will review all suggestions and consider their suitability for development. Use the link below to take the survey and have your say.

Opportunity for creatives in Hackney Wick or Fish Island

#LondonMadeMe is a project brought to you by Creative Enterprise Zone. The project will work with artists, creators and makers drawn from across the nine current Creative Enterprise Zones to deliver an innovative immersive training experience. This will comprise a detailed, five-day training programme for selected participants focused on developing the practical skills, expertise and mindset necessary to establish and launch a successful retail experience in today’s challenging high street context.

The project will culminate in the ’real-time’ build, fit-out and launch of a pop-up retail site in a Central London location at which participants will sell their products and participate in a scheduled programme of events and activations. If you live or work in Hackney Wick or Fish Island – one of the nine CEZs – and the above sounds interesting to you, please email for more info using the link below. The deadline is 15 August.
