Stay safe in the sun

It feels like summer has finally arrived, with temperatures set to soar as high as 31 degrees this week. Although most of us will be excited to enjoy the sunny weather, it can be dangerous for vulnerable people like the elderly and young children, as it can lead to serious health conditions such as heatstroke.

To stay safe during the hot weather, remember to

  • Stay out of the heat between 11am and 3pm when temperatures will be hottest
  • Cool yourself down by having plenty of cold drinks, wearing loose clothes or taking a cool shower or bath
  • Look out for others who may be more vulnerable in the hot weather. If someone is unwell, call a doctor as they could be suffering from heatstroke.

Do not swim in Shadwell Basin – it’s not worth the risk

A reminder to residents that swimming in Shadwell Basin is strictly forbidden.

With temperatures rising, it might look tempting to take a dip, but it is extremely dangerous. The water is deep and cold, and there are underwater obstructions not visible from the surface. Sadly, people have drowned in Shadwell Basin in recent years.

Our enforcement officers regularly patrol the area to help make sure people are doing the right thing, but we need visitors to do their bit by paying attention to the signs and staying out of the water.

Tracks through Poplar: a Victorian icon returns to her roots

A Victorian steam locomotive is returning to her Poplar roots as part of her 150th birthday celebrations. London Brighton & South Coast Railway Terrier No 70 ‘Poplar’ has recently been restored to the full glory of her heyday, including reviving the original ornate livery that she carried when first built, in 1872.

Over the weekend of Saturday 18 June and Sunday 19 June, the public can pre-book to view the engine at the DLR depot in Poplar.
