Whitechapel Station gets new Bengali signage
Bengali language signage has been installed at Whitechapel Station to acknowledge the importance and contribution of the Bangladeshi community to east London, and as part of celebrations to mark 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence. Tower Hamlets Council funded the dual language signs in English and Bengali outside and throughout the station, following a council and community-led campaign for the signs to be installed.
Tower Hamlets is proud to be home to the biggest Bangladeshi community in the UK, with around a third of residents of Bangladeshi heritage and iconic areas such as Brick Lane.
Hard Talks with women in policing
Next Monday 14 March, come along for an open and frank discussion with women in the local police force. There will be officers and staff of various ranks ready to answer your questions and have an open discussion about life in the police and any concerns you may have about violence against women and girls.
The event is being held at Mulberry Academy Shoreditch, Gosset Street, E2 6NW, 6:30pm – 8:30pm and is free to attend – simply turn up and join in. There will also be a women’s street briefing and walk about taking place from 5:30pm this evening at Allen Gardens, Spitalfields Farm entrance.
Well being and togetherness events for International Women’s Week
For International Women’s Week from 6 to 12 March, we have worked with our partners to host a week-long programme of community activities to celebrate cultural wellbeing and togetherness.
Activities include walking netball tournaments, badminton, football, aerobics, body conditioning, swimming, virtual wellbeing sessions, self-defence and more.
Women’s History Month Photo Show
Exploring identity and history, photographs of women at work, home and play, in demonstrations, performances, sport and celebrations have been selected for this year’s Women’s History Month Photo Open exhibition, running until 31 March at Brady Arts and Community Centre.
Artists include Sarah Ainslie, Enza Ascione Ash, Samantha Brown, Hattie Collins, Jacqui Ennis Cole, Julie Cook, Mary Lynne Ellis, Gweniver Exton, Four Corners, Fran Hales, Jenny Lewis, Farlon Rahamon, Holly Revell, Anna Sherbany, Krystina Stimkovits and Mary Thompson.
Launch of London Boroughs Women’s Network
Hundreds of officers from councils across the capital came together to launch the London Boroughs Women’s Network at a special event this week hosted by Tower Hamlets Council.
The London Boroughs Women's Network is a collaboration between all 32 London boroughs and the City of London Corporation, created to amplify the voices of all women in London local authorities and champion the wellbeing of female staff.
42 men arrested for drugs offences in dawn raids
42 men have been arrested in Operation Continuum dawn raids which tackles drugs gangs across Tower Hamlets and Hackney. The arrests, which took place in the early hours of 24 February, 1 March and 3 March, were for offences including conspiracy to supply class A drugs, such as cocaine and MDMA.
In addition to enforcement, police and council officers were also on the ground following the raids to offer reassurance to the local community and support people with addiction to access substance misuse services.

New free parenting app
Parenting charity, Best Beginnings, has launched a new free app to help parents give their child the best start in life. Baby Buddy 2.0 provides bite-sized information and advice from pregnancy, to birth, to their babies first year.
Parents in North East London can now access extra, localised information from their local maternity unit. When joining the app, parents due to give birth at The Royal London Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton University Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital and Queen’s Hospital will have access to additional information regarding their maternity unit.
Supporting communities to trust healthcare services
The Young Foundation is hosting a series of events to discuss trust in local health services among diverse communities.
