March is Women's History Month

Women's History Month

Contemporary women artists, activists, writers and performers, women’s groups and organisations present event exhibitions and activities celebrating women at venues across the borough. We are supporting Women’s History Month in partnership with community organisation Alternative Arts.

Highlights of the packed programme include the Photo Show at The Brady Arts Centre (see below), Women In Focus Festival at Poplar Union, Photographing Protest: Resilience through a feminist lens at Four Corners, Arab Women Artists Now Festival at Rich Mix and Josephine at Half Moon Theatre. Women's History Month photo show at The Brady Arts Centre

Alternative Arts presents an exhibition by women photographers celebrating Women’s History Month with portraits and images of women at work and play, at demonstrations and celebrations, exploring their identity and history.

The images for this live exhibition have been selected from the Women’s History Month Photo Open Online 2021. View the exhibition at The Brady Art Centre from 4 – 31 March. This 2022 exhibition may also be viewed online.

Self Conscious; Dennis Beckton Art Collective

A selection of works from the East London fine art collective known as Dennis Beckton. A group of emerging artists from the University of East London who were denied a degree show due to the outbreak of covid-19 and so are utilizing the DIY ethic to kick in the door of the art world.

The exhibition is based around the theme of consciousness... be that self-conscious, class conscious, unconscious, environmentally conscious or the collective unconscious. Works include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and installation. On show at The Art Pavilion, Mile End Park, 2 – 6 March

Reflect - Reconnect - Renew at The Art Pavilion. Mile End Park

Reflect - Reconnect - Renew

This project and exhibition from THAT network will celebrate the artwork of art students from Tower Hamlets schools that have been created during the pandemic. As part of the exhibition there will be workshops to enable young people to be creative and experiment with new ideas and processes, alongside this we will offer visitors the opportunity to capture memories and thoughts about the pandemic as part of a live collaborative art piece. The exhibition is open 22 - 31 March at The Art Pavilion, Mile End Park

THAT network London is a forum for Tower Hamlets art teachers.

Forest School at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park

Local organisation, Mind in Nature is running a series of Sunday Forest School  sessions for 4-7 and 7-12 year olds this spring at The Cemetery Park. 

A morning of nature exploration, bushcraft, natural art, fire and games, activities will be seasonal and incorporate child led elements where the interests of the group dictate the flow. Sessons take place on multiple dates Find out more and book.

A live musical based on the tragic life of Ghazal Queen Begum Akhtar at The Brady Arts Centre on 12 March.

Kalakar Arts UK is famous for their live musicals. Akhtari is based on the tragic life of the most famous female vocalist India has ever produced. The audience will experience an evening of ever popular Ghazals and Semi Classical Music, Dance, powerful acting with some laughter and poetry.

Young People's Zine Making Workshop at Whitechapel Gallery

Join this workshop with OOMK exploring all things Zine making. Whether you are interested in design, building narratives, print-making, activism, publishing or something else entirely, this session will walk you through the process of making your own Zine and walk away with the know-how to keep creating in future. This FREE event is open to young people aged 15-24. Booking required.

Festival of Contemporary Music for All

Festival of Contemporary Music for All

A whole day of new music activities at Queen Mary University of London, culminating in a concert with CoMA London, London Sinfonietta, East London Community Band, CoMA Singers and QMUL Chamber Ensemble. Everybody is welcome to join the allcomers ensemble on the day for the finale

Graphic Scores and singing workshops open to all or just listen to the performances including new youth group (my sounds). Book tickets for concerts and workshops.

Plastic Free Poplar: Community Meet-Up at Poplar Union

Do you live or work in Poplar and want to live more sustainably with less plastic? Join these friendly plastic free living workshops with Sunny Jar Eco Hub and become part of this ambitious local eco-project for a greener Poplar. Applications for street parties to celebrate HM the Queen's Platinum Jubilee are now open! 2022 sees the Queen’s 70th year on the throne and Tower Hamlets Council is supporting and encouraging community celebrations taking place over the bank holiday weekend 2 - 5 June.

Applications must be submitted by 15 April.  Find out how to apply.
