Each month we share information, advice and opportunities for you to join our networks, support groups or parenting sessions.

Safe Online

Free online safety sessions for parents

The internet is amazing and opens a world of possibilities for children; but do you worry about the amount of time your child is spending online, using social media or playing computer games?  

Would you like to find out more about your child’s online world and pick up some useful tips to help keep them safe?

Free family cycle training

Take your family’s cycling skills to the next level with these free cycle training sessions with Bikeworks in Victoria Park.  The sessions take place during the February half term holiday on:

Mental Health

Children’s Mental Health Week

Place2Be, the children’s mental health charity is inviting anyone who works with, cares for or cares about children and young people to get involved in Children’s Mental Health Week which takes place from Monday 7 to Sunday 13 February.

The theme this year is Growing Together which asks how we can better support each other.

The Place2Be website contains free resources to help you take part in the week, including ideas that can easily be adapted for use in schools, home-schooling, online lessons or independent learning.

4. Bookswap

Swap your old books at Rich Mix for International Book Giving Day!

Rich Mix are holding a children’s book swap event as part of International Book Giving Day on Sunday 13 February!

Bring along your pre-loved books and swap them for new reading adventures at this popular family event. Even if you don’t have books to swap, you are still welcome to attend and take books home.

Rich Mix expert book lovers and Parent and Carer Council members will be on hand to offer advice on choosing a book that’s just right for your child!

5. Boys

Platform to Talk discussion sessions for parents

This discussion based virtual session provides a safe space for parents to come together, share their experiences and get reliable information.

The next session will discuss how gender roles and stereotypes affect young people.

Through social media, news and film we are learning more about gender roles. Gender stereotypes matter because they can limit children’s choices, behaviour, aspirations and achievements.

6. Crayons

Deadline to apply for a nursery school place

Don’t forget, if you are applying for a place in a nursery school or a nursery class attached to a primary school for your child to start in September 2022, the deadline for completed applications is Wednesday 16 February 2022.

7. Abuse

Ask for ‘Ani’ at pharmacies to get support for domestic abuse

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, you can ask for help discreetly by giving a code word to pharmacists. Just ask for “Ani” at any participating pharmacy (including all Boots stores and participating independent pharmacies).

You will be given the chance to go to a private space to talk and get help from the police or other services if needed.

The Parenting Team are launching some new parenting workshops including:

  • Promoting children’s emotional wellbeing
  • Parenting as a single parent
  • Keeping our children and young people safe
  • Hassle-free mealtimes with children

Free mental wellbeing webinars for dads

If you are a dad or male carer registered with a GP in Tower Hamlets, you can attend a free webinar hosted by Tower Hamlets Talking Therapies.

The sessions will support you in your role as a dad, talk about common concerns and offer some useful tips to support your wellbeing.

Families Matter Magazine – Spring 2022

Alongside the monthly Families Matter e-bulletin, the Parent and Family Support Service also produces a termly magazine full of local and national information on services to support families.  

This term’s edition includes the new ‘Let’s Talk SEND’ (special educational needs and disabilities) supplement with details on upcoming information and events for parents and carers.
