The Healthy Lives Team Families update contains helpful information and activities for your whole school community

This is the FAMILIES newsletter from The Healthy Lives Team. Each Friday we share relevant information, activities and resources to support your ongoing health and wellbeing.

The HEALTHY LIVES TEAM supports schools, pupils and families with everything to do with health and wellbeing. We want to help you to live fitter, healthier and happier lives.

We now have a Healthy Lives Team webpage where you can find out more about the team and access Healthy Schools resources and all our archived newsletters.

Talking about Air Pollution

Air pollution levels are high in London and this is bad for health, especially for people with asthma. Go to the ‘Tower Hamlets: Air Pollution and You’ website for tips and advice on how to avoid air pollution and look after your family. You can also sign up for free text alerts, which will tell you when air pollution levels are especially high in your local area.

If you want more advice or support on asthma and air pollution, speak to your school nurse, pharmacist, and GP. They are there to help you.

Cycling skills videos for families

Cycling offers a great way to get around, offers a good form of exercise and is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint. The Bikability Trust have created a series of short films to help families cycle together, both safely and confidently. The video also contains The Bikeability Trust's cycling top tips.

Speakeasy RSE courses for parents

Schools and parents recognise the need for effective partnerships and a two-way dialogue to strengthen home school relationships in the delivery of RSE, but many parents and carers feel embarrassed, restricted by cultural norms or are not sure how to have these conversations.

The speakeasy course delivered by the Parental Engagement Team provides a group-based opportunity for parents to learn together and acquire the confidence and skills they need to talk to their children about growing up, relationships and sex and covers safeguarding, CSE, sexting, FGM, gangs, drugs /county lines. The course explores the impact social media can have on children and young people and information on sex and relationships education in schools.

The course is delivered in partnership working closely with RSE/PHSE teachers who are invited to contribute to the course to discuss the curriculum, resources used and to dispel myths and playground ‘’mis talk’.

Curriculum activity packs from Food a Fact of Life

The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) have created a range of thematic activity packs to support primary learning. Each pack contains a teacher guide, presentation and a range of activity ideas. The packs range from Victorians, Space and learning about food through stories. Also included on the website is ‘Food Route’ which offers charts and worksheets for teaching about diet and health, shopping, active lifestyles and food safety.

BNF’s new nutrition and immunity resources show which nutrients are important to help support a healthy immune system, and the foods that provide these nutrients. There are versions of the nutrition and immunity resource - Children (10 years and younger), Teens and adults.
