Air quality projects scoop awards

Congratulations to Jill Mills and Sam Betts, a parent and teacher who have won awards for their projects to encourage more pupils to walk or bike to school. Their hard work was recognised at a ceremony organised by Sustrans, a charity which makes it easier for people to walk and cycle.

The projects were funded by our Air Quality Fund, which supports schools and community groups to improve air quality in Tower Hamlets.

We want to encourage even more parents, schools and community groups to help us to raise awareness as we work to build a cleaner, more sustainable borough.

Mayflower Primary School

Tower Hamlets school comes out on top

Mayflower Primary School has achieved the top SATs results, coming out on top of all 15,000 state and independent primary schools in England.

The achievement comes just a few months after Tower Hamlets jumped two grades to ‘good’ in its Ofsted report.

Well done to all the children and teachers at the school whose hard work helped achieve this fantastic result!

Hundreds gather for Safer Together community day

It was great to see hundreds of local residents join us at Watney Market on Saturday 16 November for our first Safer Together community day.

The fun-filled day featured a range of entertainment for adults and children alike, including  live music, face-painting, aerobics and even smoothie making powered by exercise bikes.

Meanwhile, council staff, police and other organisations were on-hand to talk all things community safety and to help people access support such as services for young people.

Gambling

Odds in favour of vulnerable residents

We have launched a new gambling policy which promises to protect the borough’s most vulnerable residents from being exploited by big bookies.

The three-year policy will prevent gambling shops from opening near schools or in deprived neighbourhoods and help to make sure that gaming products are not aimed at young people. Last year, the Gambling Commission revealed it had fined gaming companies nearly £20 million for failing to protect the UK's 460,000 problem gamblers.

The revised policy will come into effect from 14 December 2019.

Safer travel in Wapping

We want to hear your thoughts on proposals that will make it safer and easier to walk or wheel in Wapping.

The potential changes include a pocket park, a pedestrian crossing and wider pavements and dropped kerbs to make it easier to get around the area.

You have until Monday 16 December to share your thoughts on the plans.

Liveable Streets in Wapping

It’s not too late to shape our budget

This year we are spending £342.6 million on public services. We’ve worked hard to make £190 million in savings since 2010, but we still have to save an extra £39 million by 2023.

We’re currently consulting on our budget for next year, so tell us about the things that matter to you and your community by next Thursday 5 December online.

You can also join us for our Ask the Mayor Budget Special on Thursday 16 January, 7pm - 9pm at Spotlight, 30 Hay Currie St, E14 6GN.
