Coronavirus - Stay home, save lives

Stay at Home, Save Lives

A message from Cllr Allen Mayes, Cabinet Member for Health

Cllr Allen Mayes

It is vital that we all stay at home as much as possible, strictly observe social distancing guidance when we have to go out and work together to make sure that Thurrock is playing its part in combating this virus and delaying its spread.

Staying physically and mentally active is important at this time. With schools closed and children at home the best thing we can do is plan ahead and try to develop a routine. The government’s guidance says that we can go out once a day to get some exercise as long as we do not socialise with friends and stay at least two metres away from anyone we don’t live with.

I would like to thank all NHS staff, council officers and other key workers for all you are doing during this difficult time. Without you we would not be able to keep going as a society and we all value your contributions. You are truly national heroes.

Coronavirus: How you can slow the spread

Stay Home Poster

When we reduce our day-to-day contact with other people, we will reduce the spread of the coronavirus. That is why the government is telling everyone to stay at home

except for these three reasons:

  1. To shop for basic necessities or pick up medicine
  2. To exercise once a day alone, or only with those you live with, while staying at least two metres apart from other people
  3. To travel to and from work but only if working from home is not an option for you.

You should not go out for any other reason and should not meet or socialise with anyone if you do go out - even family and friends.

It is especially important that you don't visit relatives aged over 70 or those with underlying health conditions. You can learn more by reading the government's guidance on social distancing.

By following this advice we can dramatically slow the spread of this potentially dangerous virus. If we can limit the spread by 50% that will cut down the 30 day rate of infection by more than 95%.

Slowing the spread of infection

That is why it's vital that everyone plays their part by

  • Staying home unless they absolutely have to go out
  • Not meeting family or friends
  • Washing their hands regularly for at least 20 seconds
  • Keeping two meters/six feet away from anyone they don't live with when they have to go out

Daily Exercise

Belhus Woods

Under current guidance people can go out once a day for exercise like taking a walk, jogging or cycling.

Thurrock Council has kept our parks open to allow people to get some fresh air and exercise but closed play and outdoor exercise areas in line with the guidance. If you do go out please make sure that you stay at least two metres/six feet from anyone you don't currently live with, that includes any family or friends that do not live in the same home as you.

Look after your mental health

Video Chat

For some people staying at home can be isolating so it's important that while you are at home because of coronavirus you make sure to take some time to look after your mental health.

Staying at home can be frustrating and the current situation could lead to people being worried or anxious about their health or their family and friends' well-being.

By taking some time to plan a routine and set goals you can find a way to stay in touch with friends and family, plan activities you enjoy and make sure you get the right amount of physical exercise and sleep.

Modern technology can go a long way to helping people feel connected and keep active. Use the phone, email, messaging apps, video chat or social media to stay in contact with friends and family to seek and give reassurance.

There are some fantastic resources online which could help you learn a new skill, reconnect with an old friend, take part in a virtual pub quiz or even stream a live concert or theatre event.

Try to go out once a day if you are able to, making sure to follow social distancing guidelines. If you can’t do that then bring the outside into your home by opening windows, spending some time looking at the world through your window or heading out into the garden for some fresh air

Follow the advice from the governmentThe Mental Health Foundation or the NHS to make sure you take care of your mental health. There is also specific advice for parents and carers supporting young people's mental health during this time
