A13 Road Widening 2

Summer 2019

A13 works

In recent months activity has increased significantly along the A13, with drainage installation works, earthworks, piling and utilities works all now taking place at the side of the road.

A 40mph speed restriction remains in place on the A13, with a 30mph limit on Stanford Road and the Orsett Cock roundabout.

The A13 project involves widening the road between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope) from two to three lanes in both directions and replacing four bridges.

Once the project is completed in autumn 2020, there will be a continuous three lane carriageway from the M25 to Stanford-le-Hope, reducing congestion, improving journey times and supporting further economic growth.

Weekend road closures for summer 2019

A13 weekend closure

A13 closures under Orsett Cock roundabout

A short section of the A13 will be closed in both directions beneath the Orsett Cock roundabout during an entire weekend for piling works.

The closure will be in place from 9pm on Friday 16 August until 5am on Monday 19 August 2019.

Traffic will be diverted via the exit slip roads onto the Orsett Cock roundabout and back onto the A13 via the entry slip roads (as indicated above).

Similar weekend closures are also currently planned for 13-16 September, 20-23 September, 27-30 September, 4-7 October, 11-14 October and 18-21 October 2019.

A13 between Orsett and Stanford-le-Hope

The A13 will be closed in both directions between the A128 (Orsett) and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope) from 9pm on Friday 30 August until 5am on Monday 2 September 2019 for the demolition of Saffron Gardens Bridge.

Additional work will be undertaken by BT to install new communications cables underneath the A13 during the same closure.

Cross-county road users are advised to avoid the A13 and use alternative routes such as the A130, A127 and M25 to minimise delays to their journey and relieve pressure on local routes. Local traffic will be diverted via the A1013 Stanford Road.

Working at weekends enables us to keep the road open during the week when traffic flows are much higher.

During all road closures traffic will be heavier than normal and we advise people to plan their journeys accordingly. The latest road closure information is available on our website.

Project partners up with Thurrock Foodbank and doing its bit for the environment too

Foodbank

The project’s contractor, Kier, has partnered up with local charity Thurrock Foodbank and is now registered as an official donation point.

Non-perishable food and toiletries can be donated at the Kier office, Stanford Road, Orsett, RM13 3DU.

Kier is also committed to minimising its impact on the environment and has introduced several initiatives in its main site offices to help reduce its carbon footprint.

One such idea involved switching halogen and sodium bulbs in the main site offices (a former car showroom) to LED technology and installing infra-red sensors to ensure that lighting is only on when needed.

By doing this it  has reduced energy consumption by 1900KWh per week. That’s enough to power an average-sized home for six months.

Considerate Constructors Scheme success

CCS

The A13 project has scored 41 out of 50 during its most recent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) site assessment.

The CCS independently rate construction sites against quality standards.

The scheme helps ensure that sites are clean and tidy, respectful towards the community, protective of the environment, operating safely and providing adequate welfare for their workforce.

Your A13 questions answered

Piling

What will the speed limit be on the A13 once the work is complete?

The national speed limit for a dual carriageway will be restored – this is 70mph for cars and 60mph for most goods vehicles. The average speed camera enforcement system will also be removed.

Will the vibration caused by the works cause damage to my home?

While vibration may be noticeable at times, it will not be strong enough to cause damage to nearby properties. The project team work alongside the council’s Environmental Health Officers who use specialist equipment to monitor our sites and ensure that levels remain under control.

Why have you removed the traffic islands on the approaches to Orsett Cock roundabout?

By removing these raised islands and resurfacing the area, we have created additional space which enables us to temporarily re-align the approaches to the roundabout. This extra space will be needed when we come to build the junction which connects with the new roundabout.

Come along and meet the team

Our monthly drop-in sessions continue to prove a popular way for residents and road users to find out more about the works and to ask any questions.

The next events are on Thursday 15 August, Thursday 12 September and Thursday 17 October.

The sessions are held between 9am and 6pm at the Kier site offices (A1013 Stanford Road, Orsett, RM16 3DU - opposite Voujon Restaurant).

No appointment is necessary and parking is available.
