A13 Road Widening 2

March 2019

The A13 road widening project is one of the largest local authority-managed road schemes in the country and involves widening the A13 from two to three lanes in both directions between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope).

Once it is completed in autumn 2020 there will be a continuous three lane carriageway from the M25 to Stanford-le-Hope, reducing congestion, improving journey times and supporting further economic growth.

40mph speed limit and narrow lanes in place

A temporary 40mph speed restriction is now in place on the A13, with camera enforcement in use.

In addition, a 30mph limit is in place around the Orsett Cock roundabout and on the A1013 Stanford Road.

Lane widths have been narrowed to enable works to take place at the side of the road without having to reduce the number of lanes available.

All restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of road workers and the public. Road users are asked to drive carefully through the works and to pay attention to road signs.

Drainage and piling among upcoming works

Upcoming works

A13

Drainage installation and earthworks will take place to enable the construction of new lanes. Work will take place behind the temporary barrier and will not impact road users. The existing road signs, crash barrier and noise fencing will be removed and these features will be replaced once the construction works in each area are complete.

Orsett Cock roundabout

We are working to prepare for piling works, which will enable us to construct the supports for the new bridges. As part of this work, there will be overnight road closures under the junction on the A13 from late April until September, with traffic diverted via the slip roads and roundabout.

Horndon Road bridge

Work to build new foundations and embankments is continuing. Piling works will take place near the existing bridge and will be noisy at times. To minimise disruption to residents this work will take place during daytime hours.

Utilities and archaeology

Utilities work is taking place in various locations. This includes gas diversions, which will require temporary traffic lights on Stanford Road (adjacent to Park Road). In addition, gas main works will take place near Saffron Gardens Bridge until October. Archaeological investigations will be taking place at the Orsett Cock Roundabout and near The Manorway junction to identify any items of historical interest.

More information about upcoming works is available online.

Defibrillator made available for public use

Defib 2

The project’s contractor, Kier, has made its on-site defibrillator available for public use by registering with the National Defibrillator Network (NDN).

The NDN links the ambulance service and bystanders with details of local defib devices, helping to get urgent assistance to those having an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Find out more about the project on the British Heart Foundation website.

Contractor giving back to the community

skills

Kier and its traffic management contractor Chevron recently attended the council’s South Essex Skills Roadshow at South Essex College in Grays.

Representatives from both companies spoke with visitors to promote local job vacancies and to engage with apprentices and graduates looking to take their first steps in the construction industry.

Where possible, we also try to use local sub-contractors, suppliers and materials to reduce our carbon footprint and support the local economy. In December 2018 alone, the project invested nearly £320,000 in local small and medium enterprises based within 10 miles of the project site.
