The A13 road widening project is one of the largest local authority-managed road schemes in the country and involves widening the A13 from two to three lanes in both directions between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope).
Once it is completed in autumn 2020 there will be a continuous three lane carriageway from the M25 to Stanford-le-Hope, reducing congestion, improving journey times and supporting further economic growth.
40mph temporary speed limit to be introduced next month as main works start
Preparatory works started last winter and are now nearing completion.
Up until now most of the works have taken place off the carriageway, however road restrictions are now set to be introduced to ensure the next phase of the project can be completed safely.
A temporary 40mph speed restriction will be put in place from Monday 25 February until the completion of the project in autumn 2020, with camera enforcement in use.
Lane widths will be narrowed, with wide vehicles such as HGVs banned from travelling in the lanes closest to the central reservation. Lane restrictions will also be put in place on the entry and exit slip roads at the Orsett Cock and The Manorway junctions.
A free vehicle recovery service will be on stand-by to respond to broken down vehicles and other incidents.
We are continuing to do everything possible to keep disruption at a minimum during the A13 widening works, but road restrictions are now necessary to ensure the safety of both workers and the travelling public.

Overnight closures scheduled while barriers are installed and lane widths narrowed
A series of overnight closures are planned over the coming weeks while the new road restrictions are put in place.
These will all take place overnight between 9pm and 5am to minimise disruption.
Starting on Monday 28 January, there will be various overnight lane closures and slip road closures on the A13 for four weeks while CCTV and average speed cameras are installed.
From Monday 25 February there will then be a series of six overnight road closures on the A13 to allow a temporary safety barrier to be installed at the roadside and lane widths to be narrowed. The closures are as follows:
- Monday 25 February and Tuesday 26 February - the A13 eastbound will be closed between the A128 (Orsett Cock) roundabout and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope) junction from 9pm until 5am
- Wednesday 27 February and Thursday 28 February - the A13 will be closed in both directions between the A128 (Orsett Cock) roundabout and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope) junction from 9pm until 5am
- Friday 1 March and Saturday 2 March - the A13 westbound will be closed between the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope) junction and the A128 (Orsett Cock) roundabout from 9pm until 5am
Signed diversions will be in place via the A1013 Stanford Road.
