A13

August 2018

The A13 between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (The Manorway, Stanford-le-Hope) is currently operating over capacity, with about 77,000 vehicles using it every day.

The A13 widening project will increase that section of the A13 from two to three lanes in both directions. The newly widened section of road will provide a continuous three lane road in both directions between the M25 and Stanford-le-Hope.

As part of the work, four bridges will be replaced, the Orsett Cock roundabout will be widened and new traffic lights will be installed to help manage vehicle flows more safely.

Investing in widening the A13 will support the economy across the region, enhance road safety, reduce congestion and improve journey times.

Preparation continuing ahead of main on-road works in early 2019

A13 general works

Preliminary work started in December 2017 and will continue throughout autumn and winter 2018. It includes construction of site offices, vegetation removal, ground investigation, boundary fencing, road surface testing, archaeology, drainage and utility work.

This work is mainly taking place away from the road, with minimal impact on road users.

The main on-road works are expected to start in early 2019, with the project scheduled to be completed in autumn 2020.

Wildlife safely removed from works site

Wildlife

A lot of vegetation has been carefully removed from within the highway boundary so there’s enough space to widen the road and build new bridges.

A significant number of trees, hedges and grassland areas will be planted once the road widening work has finished.

The project team are also working with a team of ecologists to ensure that protected species, such as snakes, slow worms and lizards are moved from the construction site to safe areas.

Additional work with badger specialists has taken place to limit the impact on these animals.

Flowering bulbs donated to wildlife hospital

Bulbs

We were recently contacted by the South Essex Wildlife Hospital, which was keen to make use of flowering bulbs that had been removed as part of vegetation clearance work at Orsett Cock roundabout.

They were duly delivered to their new home, ensuring that they did not go to waste.

The hospital is a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and public advice charity. Its work includes caring for sick and injured wildlife and releasing them back into the wild.

Information events planned for October

Residents, road users and all interested parties are invited to attend public information events about the scheme in October 2018.

Visitors will be able to learn more about the scheduled works, see plans and drawings in greater detail and ask questions about the project.

The events are drop in style, so you do not need to make an appointment and all venues are fully accessible for those with mobility restrictions.

  • Monday 15 October (2pm - 8pm) – East Thurrock Community Association, 77 Corringham Road, Stanford-le-Hope SS17 0NU
  • Tuesday 16 October (2pm - 8pm) - Horndon-on-the-Hill Methodist Church Hall, High Road, Horndon-on-the-Hill SS17 8LN
  • Friday 19 October (2pm - 8pm) - Orsett Churches Centre, High Road, Orsett RM16 3ER

Car parking facilities will be available at all venues and there will be a kid’s zone to keep children entertained.
