Our budget plans for 2025/26 were approved earlier this week at a meeting of our full council.
Members approved a 2.99% increase in council tax for the upcoming year, resulting in an additional 11p per week (£5.87 annually) for the average Band D property.
Council tax bills in Teignbridge include contributions not only to the district council but also to Devon County Council, Devon & Cornwall Police, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority, as well as town and parish councils. For every pound of council tax collected, just 8p of that pound is allocated to Teignbridge.
Our recent public consultation on the budget revealed that 78% of respondents were in favour of raising council tax to support our communities, and 85% of respondents agreed with our priorities – affordable housing, good local jobs and the economy. A big thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey.
Devon County Council has partnered with local landscaping firm, Teign Trees, to install seven large tree planters along Queen Street in Newton Abbot, each of which will contain a Juneberry tree (Amelanchier arborea).
Juneberry trees are small in size but provide beautiful white blossom in the spring followed by berries, making them visual appealing as well as producing nectar for pollinating insects and berries for birds to enjoy.
There will also be two smaller planters that will host a range of flowering plants and three new public benches. The new double-headed hanging baskets poles are already in place and Newton Abbot Town Council will be arranging their wonderful annual hanging basket display ready for the spring.
These green elements are the final stage of the Queen Street Enhancements scheme, along with the installation of a zebra crossing near the War Memorial, which was delayed due to the recent Wales and West gas works.
We have been working in partnership with Devon County Council, WSP and Cormac to deliver this scheme. For more information on the Queen Street Enhancements and to sign up to the Queen Street newsletter, please visit Devon County Council’s website.
The team behind the hugely successful Let’s Talk safeguarding programme have now created a new series of free online sessions aimed at dads and male carers.
We all know parenting can be difficult at times, and according to research, dads and male carers can often find it even harder to support their children as advice and help is frequently tailored towards mothers and female carers.
The short online sessions running this March provide tips and techniques covering key safeguarding issues to help men to feel more confident in their parenting so they can support young people to navigate some of the challenges they face.
Each session will start at 7pm and last for around 20 minutes. You can choose from the topics below and are welcome to attend all four sessions:
So if you’re a Dad, grandad, uncle, carer or male role model to a young person and want to help support and keep them safe, book your Let’s Talk Dad’s session today.
While these sessions are aimed at dads and male carers, all parents and carers are welcome.
From Monday 3 March to Monday 31 March, plant machinery will be using the seawall to access Coryton Cove in Dawlish to carry out essential paving repairs.
Please take when you are visiting Coryton Cove while the works are taking place.
Posters have been displayed in the area to warn people about the works and machinery, and we apologise for any disruption while these essential works take place.
