Support for care leavers
A package of measures to create better life chances for care leavers, by providing them with cost-of-living and wellbeing support as they move to adulthood, is expected to be approved at next week’s full council meeting.
The support proposed is in line with a council motion approved in October to work with Devon County Council and other districts to support care leavers.
Under the proposals care leavers would receive a 100% council tax discount as well as free membership to council-run leisure centres to support their physical and mental health. And to increase employment opportunities for young people leaving care, the council will look at how it can offer work experience opportunities for care leavers up to age 25.
Care leavers identified by Devon County Council will automatically receive the council tax discount without having to apply for it and will be advised of the support package available to them including how to apply for a free Leisure Centre membership and/or work experience placement.
The cost of the package for the current financial year estimated at £9,500 will be carried by the council but from April Devon County Council will fund the council tax discount in line with the percentage council tax it receives.
The debate at full council on Tuesday can be followed live via our webcast service.
Staff from the Council’s Coastal, Blitz and Resorts Teams have cleared a large piece of discarded trawler netting that had washed up on Teignmouth Beach and had become entangled round one of the groynes.
As well as being an unsightly hazard to beach users, discarded sections of netting can continue to float for years ‘ghost’ fishing in the ocean threatening marine life.
