20mph limits outside Newton Abbot’s schools from mid-September
Devon County Council is implementing new 20mph speed restrictions near Newton Abbot’s schools and colleges to help ensure that pupils, students and staff can walk to and from school in safety.
Work to make changes, such as new signs and road markings on part or all of 13 roads in the vicinity the town’s primary and secondary schools, starts in mid September.
Once we’ve completed the works part or all of the 13 roads will have 20mph speed restrictions during each school’s drop-off and pick-up times.

Lea Mount footpaths to close for cliff resilience work
Footpaths from Lea Mount park down on to Marine Parade, Dawlish will be closed to keep everyone safe as Network Rail continues its cliff resilience work between Dawlish and Holcombe.
The closures, which are marked in red on the above map, are due to take place between Monday 4 September 2023 and Wednesday 31 January 2024. Access into Lea Mount park from Teignmouth Road will be maintained.
In addition, Kennaway footbridge near Boat Cove will be closed intermittently for a few hours at a time while soil nails are drilled into the cliff close by. This will be managed in line with the sea conditions to ensure there is always an alternative safe route other than the sea wall during a storm.
The work, which is part of the South West Rail Resilience Programme, involves installing a system of soil nails and netting to reduce the risk of rocks falling onto the railway below, with the project set to last until spring next year.
