Affordable homes to be advertised soon
Local people with a connection to Widecombe in the Moor who want to rent a new affordable home in the village are urged to register with Devon Home Choice so they can apply when properties are advertised later this year.
The first of eight new homes for rent in Teign Housing’s new affordable Housing scheme at Brook Lane Cottages is expected to be advertised between July and early autumn 2023, about eight weeks before they are due to be finished.
Two one-bedroom, two two-bedroom and four three- bedroom homes will be marketed and advertised on Devon Home Choice for at least 13 days, probably in two or more batches.
To be considered, residents must have a housing need, a local connection and be currently registered with Devon Home Choice. Those already registered can update their Devon Home Choice application if they have not mentioned a local connection.

Energy efficiency upgrades available for low-income households without mains gas
Lower-income householders across Devon and Torbay whose homes are not on the gas grid are invited to apply for free energy efficiency improvements to their homes.
Eligible homeowners will be supported throughout the works and can help decide what improvements are made.
All those supported through the scheme will receive a whole house energy improvement plan which can be used to carry out further, self-funded measures in the future.
The Home Upgrade Grant scheme aims to deliver energy efficiency and low carbon heating improvements to low-income households living in poorly performing homes.
Devon County Council has secured £13.2 million funding to deliver this project over two years from April 2023 until March 2025.
This scheme is open to households whose homes are not heated by gas (ie dwellings that use oil, LPG, coal, solid fuels or electricity for heating purposes), have an Energy Performance Certificate of D, E, F or G and who are on a low income.

A month to claim vouchers
The government is encouraging households on traditional prepayment meters to redeem their energy bill support vouchers, with £160 million yet to be claimed.
The vouchers allow eligible customers to access discounts of up to £400 on their energy costs, which direct debit customers will have automatically received this winter.
The scheme remains open until 30 June and customers can redeem the vouchers at their local Post Office or PayPoint.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has produced a fact sheet for consumers on a traditional prepayment meter to help applicants receive the government discount vouchers. Councils are encouraged to share this information as appropriate.
Promenade opens as sea wall is completed
Dawlish’s £80 million sea wall opened yesterday giving local people and visitors access to 415m of new promenade.
The second section of the new Dawlish sea wall, which will help protect the railway from extreme weather and rising sea levels for generations to come, stretches between Coastguards and Colonnade breakwaters.
It is linked to the first section at Marine Parade by a new footbridge, running parallel to the railway viaduct.
Completion of the £80m Government-funded project means the community and visitors to Dawlish can now enjoy the accessible high-level promenade all the way from Boat Cove to Coastguards footbridge, where it then joins the original sea wall. The beach between Colonnade and Coastguards breakwaters will also reopen to the public now that construction is complete.
Here to Help
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) want to make it easier for businesses to do the right thing and protect consumers.
Businesses can now find all FSA business guidance, from how to set up a food business to food hygiene and allergen management, in one place in the improved business guidance hub on food.gov.uk.
The FSA are also sharing a variety of real-life case studies from food businesses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as a conversation with an Environmental Health Practitioner, to share experiences of food hygiene inspections and setting up a safe food business.

Rail services face disruption
A reminder that there is further industrial action on the railways this coming week
On Wednesday 31 and Saturday 3 June, the ASLEF (train drivers) union will be on strike, and the RMT (on board and station staff) have also announced an additional strike on Friday 2 June.
On all three days GWR says it will operate a limited service, which will start later and finish much earlier than normal, with some parts of the network having no service whatsoever.
GWR says that services that do run will be much busier than usual and subject to short-notice alteration and cancellations. Customers are advised to find alternative methods of travel or to vary the date of their journey if they can. More information can be found on GWR’s dedicated strike page at www.gwr.com/strike including when online journey planners will be updated and how to claim refunds.
Services on Tuesday 30 May, Thursday 1 June and Sunday 4 June will also be impacted with some services finishing earlier and starting later than usual, and customers travelling on those dates should check their journey before travel using www.gwr.com/check.
