Ace investment for tennis - what's not to love?

Almost a quarter of a million pounds will be invested into renovating nine local park tennis courts to boost participation in the sport and encourage people to be more active.

Teignbridge has teamed up with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to refurbish public courts in Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Buckfastleigh as part of a national drive to open up the sport and encourage more people to pick up a racket.

More than half the budget will come from a nationwide investment by the Government and LTA Tennis Foundation. The remainder of the funding will come from developer planning contributions.

Over a 10-12 week period, three courts at Forde Park in Newton Abbot will be refurbished followed by two at Duckspond Road in Buckfastleigh.  The tennis court at Teignmouth Den and three at Newton Abbot’s Bakers Park will also be improved with work expected to start on 22 May.

A new online booking platform – used successfully by local councils across the county - will be set up which will also link into the LTA website making it easier for people to find and book a court.

An annual household family membership pass will cost £36 (for up to 10 family members) or infrequent players or visitors will be able to book at a cost of £6 per hour with rates discounted for those on income support.

Further investment to improve muti-use games area

Just under £50,000 will be invested in improving the multi-use games area next to the Ashburton Road refurbished play park.

Work is expected to get underway next week to install a high quality sports surface which will allow all year round play, reduce maintenance and improve safety.

The area has suffered in recent years due to poor drainage and playing surface.

The resurfacing will include built-in markings enabling basketball and football to be played as well as a range of other sports.

The work is due to be completed at the end of the month, but until then there will be some restrictions to the multi-use games area; however the pump park and play area will remain open.

Re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant

We recently re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant at the recent Ten Tors event with the Army.  It reaffirms our commitment to do all that we can to support the armed forces community and their families.

This re-signing come about as a result of the Armed Forces Act 2021 which effectively made the Armed Forces Covenant a legal duty to help prevent service personnel and veterans being disadvantaged when accessing public services.

15-21 May 2023 Mental Health Awareness Week. Mental Health Foundation #ToHelpMyAnxiety

Help to deal with anxiety

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week (15-21 May) and this year’s theme is anxiety.

The national awareness day, hosted by The Mental Health Foundation (MHF) for more than two decades, aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, encourage us all to look after our mental wellbeing and take practical steps to combat issues such as anxiety.

The MHF says that anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems we can face. In a recent mental health survey it carried out, a quarter of adults said they felt so anxious that it stopped them from doing the things they want to do some or all of the time.

Practical tips on coping with anxiety are on the MHF’s website and there is also advice on the NHS Every Mind Matters webpages

If you are struggling with mental health issues, the Every Mind Matters Mind Plan quiz is a good way to get a personalised mental health action plan, containing practical tips to help you deal with anxiety, low mood, stress and trouble sleeping.

And among steps you can take to support Mental Health Awareness Week is to buy and wear a green ribbon -  the international symbol of mental health awareness.

Archaeological works at Langford Bridge

Persimmon has told us they intend to start exploratory archaeological investigation work on the Langford Bridge site, in accordance with the approved (Outline) Condition 10, reference 19/00238/COND5.

A small team from Wessex Archaeology are starting evaluation works and are expected to be on site from 5 June.

They are likely to begin the evaluation to the east of Kingskerswell Road and will work with the County Archaeologist before handing over this section to Persimmon and moving on to other parts of the site.

A Phase by Phase sign off procedure will be agreed and there will be a handover to Persimmon from the archaeologists for each phase once confirmation from DCC Historic Environment Team that all archaeological works have been completed and appropriately recorded.

Plant and equipment will be present on site to undertake the works but residents should not be concerned that this is an indication that development is starting as this is not the case.

How should we adapt to climate change?

Devon County Council is asking you to give your views on a regional strategy that will help ensure that that our county as well as Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly can make the changes needed to cope with the worst effects of climate change.

Residents are being consulted on the Climate Adaptation Strategy for Devon, Cornwall, and Isles of Scilly ahead of its publication later this year.

To effectively respond to the climate crises, it is vital that strategies are put in place to deal with both the cause of rising greenhouse gases and their effect on our communities.
