Household Support Fund open for applications

hand holding open an empty purse/wallet

The Household Support Fund is now open for applications to support residents most in need this winter.

The fund provides short-term financial support to meet immediate needs and help those struggling to afford food, energy and water bills and other essentials; although we cannot give cash to people.

This latest fund of £56,000 is available for households that have not received either a £650 cost-of-living payment or a previous Household Support Fund payment.

The government scheme, which is being run in partnership with Devon County Council, has already given almost £220,000 to residents across the district to provide financial support towards the cost of living, as well as helping carers who might not have been eligible.  We have also given £60,000 to community and voluntary groups and Exeter Community Energy.

Anyone who meets the criteria, which aims to target our limited funds to support those who need our help the most, can apply via our website

The fund will close on 31 March unless all the funding has been spent before this date.

0% interest loans to help spread the cost of home heating

Teignbridge.gov.uk Bulk buy fuel loans for off gas homes (0% representative APR) Apply now Lendology.cic

Living without mains gas can be expensive. For those who are buying home heating fuel in bulk, a council-funded loan may be a good solution to spread the cost.

We are working in partnership with social enterprise lender Lendology CIC, to provide 0% interest Bulk Buy Fuel loans to homeowners, social tenants, and private tenants to spread the cost over the winter months.

The loan can be used to buy oil, gas, wood or other bulk-buy fuel sources and is repayable over six to 12 months.  Lendology encourages people to save alongside the loan to help pay for the next bulk purchase and to use local bulk buy schemes to save money.

Lendology’s Renewable Energy Loans can also be used to help homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint by moving to more sustainable heating for their homes.

Building control awards celebrations

Building Control awards celebration

Staff from Devon Building Control attended the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Grand Final Awards at The Westminster Plaza Hotel in London last week.

Five companies from the area made it to the final in different award categories with Lilburn and Elliott Construction Ltd winning the Best Residential and Small Commercial Builder category.  Judging is based on not just the end result but the quality of craftmanship and the relationship between builder and Building Control Surveyor.

Devon Building Control were also nominated for Best Building Control Team but unfortunately, they were pipped by Bath and North East Building Control

Don't let fear of cancer stop you getting help

Too many over 50s don’t seek help when feeling unwell for fear of a possible cancer diagnosis.

The UKHSA has launched new campaign which tries to tackle concerns that people may have.

The campaign message tells you that if something in your body doesn’t feel right, don’t carry the worry of cancer with you. Tests could put your mind at rest. Until you find out, you can’t rule it out.

So if you're concerned, get in touch with your GP practice and get the problem checked out.  Find out more about the symptoms of cancer on the NHS website.
