Big local lotto win
One lucky lottery player won £2,000 last weekend by matching five numbers in our Teignbridge Lottery for Communities.
Graham Thompson, Chair of Teign Valley Museum & Archive Trust, was delighted with his win which he has generously donated to the Trust. “Teign Valley Museum and Archive Trust has entered over 4000 items on its website and has as many queuing up. This prize, which has been handed to the Trust, will help replace our ageing computer dying of old age so has come at just the right time. Without our computer all activity would have ceased,” he said
“Thank you to Teignbridge Lottery for Communities for this opportunity and particularly to the person who thought of it in the first place."
A supporter of The Alice Cross Centre matched four numbers last weekend and won £250 and there were winners of other smaller prizes.
A total of 67 good causes are benefitting from the money being raised by the 1,664 lottery tickets sold so if you want to support one, go to the Teignbridge Lottery for Communities website and buy a ticket. Match six numbers and you will win the £25,000 jackpot!

Have you got photo ID? You'll need it to vote in May's local elections
 From 4 May, voters in England will need to show photo identification (ID) to vote at polling stations in local elections, Police and Crime Commissioner elections, UK parliamentary by-elections and recall petitions. From October, photo ID will also be mandatory in general elections.
This follows the government’s decision to require voters to show photo ID when voting in person.
A wide range of photoID will be accepted at polling stations including:
- Various concessionary travel passes
- PASS cards
- Ministry of Defence identity cards
- Photocard parking permits issued as part of the Blue Badge scheme
- Driver’s licenses
- Passports
- Free Voter Cards, provided by local authorities
Details of all current photo ID options are set out on the electoral commission website.
People who don’t already have an accepted form of photo ID, but are registered to vote, can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate on line, which will go live on Monday 16 January. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate for the May local elections is 5pm on Tuesday 25 April 2023.
Paper application forms will be available from our electoral services team and in addition to information on its website, the electoral commission has set up a helpline to support people - 0800 328 0280.
People who don’t want to show photo ID when voting can apply for a postal vote.

Business waste survey
Newton Abbot Town Council is asking local businesses to complete a short survey on managing their waste by 29 January.
How you manage your waste can have an impact on your customers, your company image, your costs and the environment.
The quick survey is designed to start a conversation with businesses and to gauge interest in an event which will be run by and for Teignbridge businesses to promote waste reduction, better packaging and less harmful waste disposal. Charles Baughan, owner of Westaway Sausages, has offered to host the event.
‘It All Adds Up’ energy-savings
The Government’s ‘It All Adds Up’ energy-saving campaign highlights a number of ways that people can cut their energy bills. Top tips include:
- Reducing the temperature a boiler heats water to before it is sent to radiators from 75⁰C to 60⁰C, which could save around £100 annually;
- Turning appliances off at the plug, which could save approximately £70 per year;
- Reducing heating loss from the property by putting draught excluders around doors or by adding clear film across windows, which could save around £60 a year.
