Successful lottery first weekly draw and great news for one local charity

The Helen Foundation

The first draw of our new Teignbridge Lottery for Communities took place last Saturday with one lucky £250 winner matching four of the six numbers.

The winner was Roger Kirk from The Helen Foundation.

On his win, Mr Kirk said: “I am Chairman of The Helen Foundation (THF) and was absolutely delighted to find last week that I had received an early Christmas present - winning the top prize of £250 in the first draw of the newly launched Teignbridge Lottery for Communities!

“We registered the charity and along with a number of other THF supporters, I bought my own raffle tickets to help support the charity. Imagine my complete surprise when I received an e-mail from the lottery organisers to say that I had won the top prize of £250 in the first week’s draw by matching four out of six of the lottery numbers.

"The ticket numbers I had chosen were those of the birthdate of one of THF’s trustees! The £250 will be donated straight back to The Helen Foundation to further the work of the charity. It’s a huge thank you to the Teignbridge Lottery for Communities that their work results in real benefits for charities, which in turn benefits people in Teignbridge. If you can, buy tickets and help good causes with a gift that goes on giving!”

Most successful new lottery

Our lottery operators, Gatherwell have told us that the Teignbridge Lottery for Communities has been the most successful new lottery that they've launched over the past 18 months.  A huge thanks to all the good causes that have registered and to everyone who bought a ticket!

It’s estimated that based on the current ticket sales, good causes will benefit to the tune of £44,000 in the coming year, which is great news.  The figure will increase if more people buy tickets for the lottery which now has a weekly Saturday night draw.

So if you want to support local good causes you can buy your Teignbridge Lottery for Communities ticket on the website.

We hope we will have more lucky ticket winners in Saturday's draw.

Council news

Local plan consideration postponed until January

The Extraordinary Council meeting to approve the latest version of the Local Plan for public consultation has been postponed until Thursday 12 January 2023.  This follows the announcement by the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove MP, on proposed changes to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill relating to housebuilding targets.

Officers will review the details of the proposed changes and identify any implications for the Local Plan that councillors need to be aware of before they discuss the recommendation to approve the Proposed Submission Local Plan which will be subject to public consultation early next year.

Initial feedback supports allowing bikes in parks

Person riding a bicycle with a shipping bag on handle bars

Last week’s launch of our six-week consultation on changing the 1951 rule which makes it illegal to ride any type of bike in Newton Abbot’s parks has already attracted a lot of interest.

Almost 250 people have responded so far, with more than half supporting the proposals.  Residents and visitors have until Thursday 12 January to respond to the consultation on whether the byelaw should be changed to enable clearly marked park routes to be dedicated for use as safe, off-road travel links for people on bikes.

Allowing people to use bikes in parks would enable people to avoid heavy traffic routes and use their bikes to cycle to school, to work or to shop.

By enabling people to use clearly marked local park routes, the council hopes to encourage more people to adopt active ways to travel while at the same time making sure parks remain safe for walking, for children’s play and for enjoying opportunities to relax outdoors.

Staying warm and healthy in the cold

With temperatures falling, the UKHSA has issued a Cold weather alert highlighting steps we can take to stay warm and safe.

Advice includes:

  • Heat your living room during the day and your bedroom just before going to sleep (if you can’t heat all the rooms you use)
  • Wear several layers of thinner clothing - it's better than one thicker layer!
  • Make sure you have plenty of hot food and drinks

Tips for staying warm and well this winter are on its website and cover topics such as financial help, healthy lifestyle, flu jabs and heating.

If you're struggling to pay your heating bills, our Cost of Living web pages gives more advice and guidance on where to find help.

Don't leave it too late to claim pension credit and cost of living payment

Pension credit tops up your income and can help with living costs. Apply by 18 December and you could get a £324 cost of living payment

If you're a pensioner don't forget to check if you're entitled to Pension Credit as soon as possible, and no later than 18 December, as you could qualify for an extra £324 cost-of-living payment.

The Government's Pension Credit is designed to help people with daily living costs who are over State Pension age and on a low income, though individuals do not need to be in receipt of State Pension to receive it.

Pension Credit can be claimed by phone and online. An online Pension Credit calculator is available to help pensioners check if they’re likely to be eligible and get an estimate of what they may receive.

Timetable changes, new trains and industrial action

Railway timetables across the country will be changing from Sunday (11 December).  GWR says that changes to times on its network are minimal, but customers should check before they travel at www.gwr.com/check

GWR is also introducing Intercity Express Trains (currently used on inter-city services to and from London) onto our Cardiff-Penzance route, serving the Welsh capital, Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton and into Devon and Cornwall. These will replace a number of Castle Class trains which have been in service for nearly 50 years. GWR says this change will make a significant contribution to cutting its carbon emissions. Bicycle reservations will be compulsory.

With industrial action taking place in the coming weeks GWR is urging passengers to check out its website industrial action page before travelling for the latest information.
