Enjoy the sun but stay safe

Important No BBQs Picnics only please

With the Met Office amber warning in place until 23.59 on Sunday, it looks like the warm weather is continuing into the weekend with the met office warning of thunderstorms early next week.

If out and about, please take care in the sun and do your bit to keep everyone safe.  Watch out for the common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Whether heading to the countryside or the beach to enjoy the warm temperatures, the risk of wildfires is so great that everyone is being encouraged to leave barbecues at home and pack a picnic instead.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting its wildfire safety advice and Dartmoor National Park has banned barbecues and open fires on the moors.

Smokers are urged to take extreme care in putting out and disposing of cigarettes and everyone is encouraged not to leave litter behind, and in particular glass bottles, which can pose a fire risk when the sun’s rays are magnified through them.

Out in the sun? Beat the heat by keeping cool, drinking lots of water and wearing sun cream to protect against high UV

The UKHSA has extended its heat-health alert until 9am next Tuesday and set out its common sense top tips for staying safe in the hot weather:

  • looking out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated – older people who may also live alone, and those with underlying conditions are particularly at risk
  • staying cool indoors by closing curtains on rooms that face the sun – and remember that it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding excess alcohol
  • trying to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest
  • walking in the shade, applying sunscreen and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat
  • avoiding physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
  • making sure you take water with you if you are travelling
  • checking that fridges, freezers and fans are working properly
  • checking medicines can be stored according to the instructions on the packaging
  • never leaving anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.

Evaluating impact of drought announcement

Devon and Cornwall is one of 14 areas announced today as officially experiencing drought.

The Environment Agency says that moving to drought status does not automatically trigger actions itself but means that the Agency and water companies will step up their efforts to manage the impact of water shortages and will press ahead with implementing their pre-agreed drought plans

Subject to any requirements announced by SW Water, the council will in the coming days be reviewing its usage to ensure that its water resources are being deployed wisely.  We will report any impact this might have on services via our social media channels and this newsletter.

Residents are encouraged to use water wisely as the Agency says drought conditions are likely to last for some time, notwithstanding the thunderstorm warnings issued by the Met Office for late on Sunday into the early part of next week.

Impression of how Newton Abbot's new cinema will look

Cinema planning decisions timetable

The applications for planning permission and Listed Building Consent (Ref. No: 22/01130/LBC) related to the proposed new Newton Abbot cinema (Ref. No: 22/01129/MAJ) are likely to be considered in November or December by our planning committee.

Statutory determination dates referenced in the information posted on our planning portal and based on when the applications were submitted have led some people to incorrectly think that decisions will be made this month.

Further documents relating to the applications have been recently uploaded to the planning portal and as a result the period for residents to comment is being extended.

A closing date for comments will be published once a date for committee consideration of both applications is set.

Broadmeadow Sports Centre work completed

The Refurbishment works are complete at Broadmeadow Sports Centre.

We firstly want to thank everyone for their patience this year whilst the decarbonisation and activity area improvements have taken place. You've all taken it in your stride and been supportive with the disruptions - from us all at Teignbridge Leisure - Thank you!

Following the decarbonisation works, our centre used £113,384 of S106 to provide upgrades to the sports hall and first-floor mezzanine studio.  S106 is money councils receive under planning agreements from developers for improving local community and social infrastructure

The sports hall has been fitted with a new multi-sport sprung-floor system, and the mezzanine studio has been enlarged by removing store rooms and equipped with a new sports floor covering.

With the works now complete, the centre is planning a phased return to normal operation across the site with exercise classes returning such as Short Tennis and Zumba.

Residents invited to share their views on home energy efficiency

Shopping vouchers worth £200, or £100, can be won by people who respond to a new survey inviting views about energy efficiency within their home.

The survey, which is supported by councils across Devon, including Plymouth and Torbay, asks what steps people are taking to ensure their homes can keep them warm this winter, while managing rising energy costs.

It seeks people’s opinions about the range of things they can do to improve energy efficiency in their homes, and how important that is to them – for environmental reasons or to help reduce their energy consumption.

ASLEF train drivers strike to cause disruption

GWR is advising that tomorrow's ASLEF strike (13 August) means no service on the vast majority of its network with disruption expected to continue into Sunday.

Services that do run will start later and finish earlier and are expected to be much busier than normal. GWR is advising customers to only travel if absolutely necessary and to make alternative arrangements.

Journey planners for this weekend have been updated, and GWR’s dedicated strike information web page is a good source of information.

On Thursday 18 and Saturday 20 August, the RMT and TSSA unions will be on strike which will result GWR says in further service disruption with some parts of the network having no service.

Don't handle sick or dead wild birds

Four of the five Avian flu disease control zones in force are in Devon: near Cullompton, near Ashburton, near Dartington  and near Tiverton.

It’s therefore important that residents and visitors take extra care if they see a dead or sick wild bird. Avian influenza, or bird flu, is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to public health is very low.

But the advice is for people not to  touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that theyfind.

If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra helpline (03459 33 55 77).
