Leisure centre energy efficiency 'highly commended'
Work to reduce the carbon footprint of our leisure centres has been Highly Commended in the Large Scale Project of the Year category at the recent Energy Efficiency Awards – South West.
The award was won in partnership with our project management company Alliance Leisure and Leisure Energy for energy reduction installations at Teignmouth Lido, Broadmeadow Sports Centre and Newton Abbot Leisure Centre.
We were also Highly Commended for demonstrating our commitment to energy reduction and net zero.
Free efficiency improvements on offer
Lower-income householders can apply for free energy efficiency improvements to their homes worth thousands of pounds.
The scheme is being delivered by the Cosy Devon partnership (which includes Teignbridge) which has secured nearly £10m of government funding.
Residents can check their eligibility and apply through the Cosy Devon website. The scheme is available to Devon residents who have an annual combined household income of less than £30,000 and whose homes have an energy Performance Certificate rating of E, F or G.
The scheme will not only offer householders the chance to improve their homes by ensuring that they are warmer, less draughty, and less damp but will also help reduce energy bills and lower carbon emissions.
Teignbridge Executive Member for Climate Change, Cllr Jackie Hook, urged local people to check their eligibility and take advantage of the funding on offer:
"This provides an opportunity for those struggling most with heating bills to make their homes more energy efficient, cutting their energy bills whilst also reducing carbon emissions and so helping to reduce the damaging effects of climate change."

Final letters are being sent to the remaining 13,000 households who have not yet received their £150 council tax energy rebate, inviting them to apply.
The vast majority of eligible households - some 34,000 - have already received their payment.
So we can respond to enquiries as quickly as possible we are writing out in batches inviting the remaining households in Bands A-D who do not pay their council tax by direct debit to apply, and we are on track to have all sent these by 24 June.
In our letter we will ask you to link to an online form to either request payment to your bank account or to have it paid to your council tax account.
Anyone unable to apply online can ring Customer Support on 01626 361101 for assistance. Due to the high volume of phone calls, we are sorry that callers may wait longer than normal for an answer.

Are you entitled to pension credit?
Pensioners are being encouraged to check their eligibility for Pension Credit as part of a Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Pension Credit Day of Action on Wednesday 15 June.
Pension Credit tops up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level of £182.60 a week for single pensioners or £278.70 for couples.
State pensioners should check how much they are eligible to claim by using an online Pension Credit calculator
Around a third of eligible pensions do not claim pension credit and even if you own your own home or have some savings its worth checking whether you’re entitled to pensions credit.
New Household Support Fund payments
A one of payment of £90 is to be made to householders in Devon of state pension age (as at 6 June 22) who are in receipt of council tax support.
The money will come from additional Government funding to support households who might be struggling most with the increase in the cost of living.
No action needs to be taken by pensioners as we will be writing to all eligible households to introduce this new payment and explain how it will be sent. You will not be asked for any personal or financial details and the payment will be made in the form of a post office voucher which can be exchanged for cash and used to pay bills, for essential household items, clothing or any other costs or items.

Limited access to Dawlish's King’s Walk promenade/beach this summer
Work to install the piled foundations for the new link bridge that will connect the two sections of new, accessible, public promenade at Dawlish starts next week
Due to the size and location of the heavy machinery required, the underpass to King’s Walk promenade and the beach will be closed although Network Rail say that if there are times during the coming weeks when it can safely be opened they will do so.
Below is a diagram (click on it for larger version) showing how the beach and King’s Walk promenade can be accessed during the period of this work, via the stepped footbridge at the end of Marine Parade near Kennaway Tunnel.
