Living with Covid – free testing ends for most people

The Government's Living with COVID plan begins today, meaning free COVID-19 testing has ended for most people, although lateral flow tests can now be bought online or from pharmacies and supermarkets.

The Government says the vaccination programme and access to antivirals, alongside natural immunity and increased understanding about how to manage risk, means that the population has much stronger protection against COVID-19 than at any other point in the pandemic.  This, it says, enables coronavirus to be managed like other respiratory infections.

Updated Government guidance is due to be published today which is expected to advise people with symptoms of a respiratory infection, including COVID-19, and a high temperature or who feel unwell, to stay at home where possible and avoid contact with other people. The new guidance will be published on the Government's website.

Free symptomatic Covid-19 testing will comtinue for at-risk groups

This week Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid announced that people at risk of serious illness from COVID and eligible for treatments, will still get free tests if they develop symptoms, along with NHS and adult social care staff and those in other high-risk settings, such as hospitals.

But while there are now no 'rules' around COVID-19, we all have a responsibility to look after each other, to respect each other's personal space and our individual circumstances – especially as Covid numbers in Devon remain high.

Homes for Ukraine

Supporting Ukrainian refugees - update

Team Devon has launched a new website for all Devon’s local authorities to support local residents who want to provide sanctuary to Ukrainian refugees.

The website will be regularly updated with the latest guidance and information and is aimed at supporting families in Devon whose relatives in Ukraine are fleeing the conflict, as well as households who volunteer to accommodate refugees.

Devon County Council is receiving the latest information from the Government on the sponsors who have registered, and DBS checks on the sponsor families are being carried out.

And Teignbridge along with all Devon’s district authorities are using a common approach to assess each sponsor’s accommodation. A number of households in Teignbridge have registered their interest in providing accommodation for Ukrainian Refugees under the scheme and accommodation checks are starting today (1 April).

Work is underway with the community and voluntary sector in Teignbridge to develop a local network of agencies which can provide refugees and their sponsors with support tailored to their individual needs and local location. Teignbridge CVS will organise this support and has set up a telephone line (07918 205 356) and email address to answer any queries from sponsors or refugees who need advice or support.

The Government says it has now written to people who have expressed an interest in providing accommodation and has also published guidance for sponsors offering accommodation, as well as a welcome guide for Ukrainians, guidance on what they need to do before they travel to the UK and what to do after they arrive. A factsheet has also been published that explains how Ukrainians can apply to the Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme.

People can still register an interest in providing accommodation via the Homes for Ukraine campaign website and the Government is regularly updating its FAQs on the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

How council tax is distributed

Budget decisions implemented from today

The start of the new financial year today means that some of our fees and charges have changed in line with budget decisions approved by councillors in February.  A schedule of new fees and charges is on our website.

Also from today, we have extended the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for a further three years until 31 March 2025.  The PSPO aims to encourage responsible dog ownership and make Teignbridge an even cleaner and greener place.  From today, the reduction of the lead length from two metres to a one metre fixed lead applies when walking your dog on a public highway, a footway, footpath or cycle track.

Dog on beach

Restrictions now in force for visiting our beaches with your dog

There are beaches across Teignbridge where you can walk your dog throughout the year.  However, from now until 30 September there are restrictions on some.  For information on the beaches you can and cannot visit with your dog, please visit our website.

Early diagnosis is key to survival

Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cancer killer. But it shouldn't be because it's treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early

Today sees the start of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the UK’s fourth most common cancer, with someone being diagnosed with the disease every 15 minutes.

Bowel cancer is also the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.  However it shouldn’t be because it’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage but this drops significantly as the disease develops.

Bowel Cancer UK throughout April will be raising awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer:

  • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo
  • A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
  • A pain or lump in your tummy

Other health problems can cause similar symptoms. But if you have one or more of these, or if things just don’t feel right, see your GP.

Visit their website for more information about bowel cancer and details of how to get involved in Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Cases of flu, norovirus and Covid on the increase in Devon

Health officials are warning that cases of COVID-19 – and other diseases that normally circulate in winter – are rising.

Residents are being urged not to visit people in hospital or care homes if they have symptoms of flu, COVID-19 or norovirus. Checking visiting restrictions before leaving home is encouraged and if attending a hospital or GP practice face coverings continue to be required unless medically exempt.

Farmers asked for views on plastic propositions

Independent researchers would like to talk to farmers to understand what they think about ideas that have been created to increase recycling of farm plastics.

This is part of a research project that Kantar Public are delivering on behalf of Defra and the Environment Agency to increase recycling rates of farm plastics.  In the last six months, Kantar has worked with the sector to understand the context around waste disposal and to suggest solutions that could help farmers recycle more.

These ideas have been developed into working prototypes and the team is eager to understand what farmers think of them.

If you're a farmer willing to give an hour of your time, any time between 8am-7pm Monday to Friday, please email Maria Gaffario at Kantar or call 07951 890318.
