14 August 2020

A summer like no other?

Heatwaves…flash storms… flooding….and coronavirus - just an English summer of challenges but if you miss the storms and are out and about enjoying the sunshine, keeping safe is vital.

RNLI beach shots

Staycations mean that more of us are heading to our wonderful beaches. Have a great time but keep an eye on the tides and don’t get caught out by them. The RNLI lifeguards patrol Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth North beaches but others don’t have the same protection.

The sea may look calm but there are strong currents as demonstrated by the RNLI having to rescue boys being swept around The Point at Teigmouth, the second such incident in a few days.

So check out RNLI’s safety advice before you go and always read the safety signs.

And even if it clouds over from time to time, getting burnt is still a risk so make sure you apply sunscreen, wear a hat and drink lots of liquid. The NHS offers great advice for coping with the high temperatures

Love Parks

Keep Britain Tidy has launched a new campaign called ‘Love Parks’  to encourage people to clear up their litter, after it conducted a survey showing that, since lockdown was eased, more than half of the country's parks have had to bring in extra resources to deal with issues such as litter and antisocial behaviour.

The Keep Tidy plea could be applied to all open spaces – parks, moorland, beaches – so please do your bit to protect our wonderful environment by taking rubbish home if you can’t find a bin.

getting tested for you

And although our coronavirus numbers remain relatively low, don’t drop your guard!

Continue to play your part in combatting Covid-19 by washing your hands regularly, wear a face covering over your nose and mouth in enclosed spaces, and stay at least a metre apart from people not in your household.

Above all else, if you feel unwell with Coronavirus symptoms get a test

Lockdown restrictions eased from tomorrow

The government has allowed changes originally scheduled for 1 August to take effect from tomorrow (15 August).

Providing coronavirus guidelines are observed, tattoo studios, beauty salons, spas and hairdressers will be able to restart “close-contact” services such as facials, eyebrow threading and eyelash treatments and wedding receptions will be allowed to have sit-down meals for up to 30 people.

In addition the following can open:

• Casinos, skating rinks and bowling alleys.
• Indoor play areas, including soft play areas.
• Indoor theatre, music and performance venues with socially distanced audiences.

social distancing badge

New social distancing badges available

Social distancing is important as it helps reduce the spread of coronairus.

Some people have, for good reasons, difficulties in social distancing. To help them, the government has produced optional badges that can be used to show the carrier may have difficulties or concerns in maintaining social distancing and that they need to be given more space.

These can be downloaded in different formats for mobile phones and can also be printed

Respect those who can't wear face coverings

clothing recycling bank

Textiles recycling banks

Our clothing banks are now open for donations, having been suspended due to Covid 19 as our contractor, the Salvation Army, was unable to operate the service.

Collections have now resumed from these banks and we would like to thank everyone for their patience while the service was suspended.

We anticipate that the banks may be busy. If one is full, please do not leave bags of clothing around it, but wait until it has been emptied or use an alternative bank. The locations of Teignbridge run clothing banks are on our website

We are not yet able to collect textiles as part of our kerbside collection service but we anticipate resuming this service in the near future.

All winners, no losers in Newton’s apprentice-style challenge

entrepreneurs at market

The sun shone on the group of budding entrepreneurs who completed their apprentice style challenge last Saturday at Newton Abbot market and raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

Three teams who had taken part in a three month virtual “Talk Action” business-skills programme took a stall at the market to put their newly acquired skills into practice and raised funds for their chosen charities – Parkinson’s UK, Mind Devon and Animals in Distress.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Newton Abbot presented the teams with certificates to mark the occasion. Following their market stall challenge, the entrepreneurs will have options for further coaching and support and some are even talking about continuing with the market stall concept in Newton Abbot.
