The latest information and guidance to support you and our communities

Enjoy yourselves but stay safe in the sun

The sun’s shining, it’s getting hotter and the Met office says the great weather will continue throughout the weekend.

Lots of us will be taking advantage of the rising temperatures and heading out to the countryside or taking a trip to the coast. With overseas holidays limited by quarantine restrictions and fears over travelling, the popular spots for sun lovers are likely to be busier than normal.

As some other parts of the country battle against rising Covid-19 infections, playing our part in controlling the risk by keeping our distance when out is vital in reducing the risk of spreading the virus.

Whether at home or out and about, staying safe by protecting yourselves from the sun’s radiation is also important. Everyone is at risk of dehydration in hot temperatures, but babies, children and older people are particularly vulnerable.

So drink lots of fluids, avoid excess alcohol, don't do strenuous activities during the hottest time of the day (typically 11am to 3pm) and look out for vulnerable neighbours for whom the heat can cause additional problems.

If travelling don't leave animals or children in a locked car - even for a short time - and please don't leave rubbish behind.

Whatever you do this weekend, have a wonderful time!

wearing face coverings

Face coverings must be worn in more places

From tomorrow (Saturday 8 August) the number of places where you must wear a face covering has been increased

You must wear a face covering if in premises providing professional, legal or financial services; theatres, cinemas, bingo halls, concert halls, museums, galleries, aquariums, indoor zoos or visitor farms; or other indoor tourist, heritage or cultural sites; libraries and public reading rooms; community centres and social clubs. The latest Government guidance includes a full list.

Although not mandatory until tomorrow, the government recommends that face coverings are worn in these settings now and it also encourages everyone to wear a face covering in other enclosed public spaces where social distancing may be difficult and where you come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

Last chance to apply for covid-19 financial support

Two government financial support schemes are ending later this month meaning that time is running out for businesses in Teignbridge to apply for grants to help them deal with the impact of Covid-19.

Final pay-outs under both the Business Support Grant and the Local Authority Discretionary Grant schemes will be made by the end of the month, providing Teignbridge District Council has the information it needs to award a grant by Friday 21 August.

Businesses which have not applied and believe they meet the criteria should advise the council of their intention to apply by 14 August.

Locally, business support grant payments totalling £33.8m have been made to 2,900 businesses and under the discretionary scheme, 500 grants have been paid out to a value of more than £1.6m.

budding entrepreneurs make site visit to market

Boost for Devon Start-ups – “Apprentice”-style!

Newton Abbot Market is the venue for a team of budding Devon entrepreneurs to put their lottery funded training into action, having been forced by Covid-19 to switch from a face to face programme to online.

They will be using skills learned during a 10 week Talk Action training course such as  business promotion, accounting, budgeting and buying when they run their market stall on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

Three teams will be rising to the challenge – one selling crystals and related products, another tending a miniature shelf garden and a third selling quality seconds women’s and children’s clothes.

The council is keen to support the initiative and has donated the use of the market stall. Markets Manager Mike Walsh said: “Markets can be an ideal way to start a fledgling business. When Talk Action contacted me, I was delighted to offer help and get involved, and saw it as a great opportunity to support and encourage the next generation of market traders.

“COVID-19 has been devastating for some businesses on the High Street, but with the enthusiasm and commitment of start-ups and training from organisations like Talk Action I am sure we can all bounce back and be as successful as before.”

leisure app

Praise for centres and new App

With the re-opening of all three of our leisure centres over the past couple of weeks, local residents have been full of praise for the arrangements put in place to keep everyone safe.

As customers get back into a fitness routine, they have been helped by our new, free Teignbridge Leisure App which enables you to make bookings on the go, check schedules, get news and push notifications as well as all the latest offers and more.

We’re working on bringing you via the App Workout@home, on-demand workouts and Shaldon Approach Golf bookings so if you haven’t downloaded it from Google Play or the App Store don’t miss out and do so today - connect and share with friends and family.

And if you haven’t used our centres, you can still download the app and sign up for a membership or non-member account.

Tracks for everyone to enjoy

Last week’s article highlighting cycling as one means of getting healthier attracted a number of comments – not least from those who wanted us to emphasise that many trails such as the Wray Valley are not just for cyclists but also for walkers and in some cases horseriders.

That’s true for many of Devon’s fantastic routes so whether you are hiking, out for a dog walk, riding or cycling please watch out and respect one another, be patient and give others time and space if you are faster than they are. There’s miles of tracks suitable for everyone so there is plenty of room.

For those of you taking up cycling again, please remember to give space and to slow down when passing pedestrians and even ring a bell or call out to give them warning that you are coming up behind them.

And if you haven’t made it out yet and need some work done on your bike, remember the government’s Fix your Bike Voucher Scheme  which will provide £50 vouchers to help you get your bike roadworthy. The first batch of vouchers has now been allocated but the government says they will make more available when they are “are confident people will be able to get their bikes fixed at a wide range of retailers without significant waiting times.”

The government is also holding a Highway Code consultation looking at how to improve safety for pedestrians, particularly children, older adults and disabled people, cyclists and horse riders. You can give your views by completing the online response form by 27 October.

Distancing keeps you safe

To protect yourself and others, when you leave home the government's advice is to:

  • stay at least a metre away from people not in your household

If you are feeling unwell, get a test and do not leave home for at least 10 days.
