All West Devon residents are invited to join West Devon Borough Council’s Wildlife Warden Scheme and ParkLife (SW) to go species spotting and take part in short, guided nature walks at a Mini-BioBlitz event.
A BioBlitz is a race against the clock to identify as many species as possible. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned scientist, this is a great opportunity to get some fresh air, develop your skills, meet new people, and make a positive impact on the environment. You don’t need to be a wildlife expert to take part. All you need is enthusiasm!
This is an exciting opportunity to take part in a range of species recording activities to help ParkLife (SW) understand how rich the area is for wildlife.
We’ll be doing quadrat surveys, transect walks and using bird song apps alongside a selection of ID cards to help identify invertebrates, butterflies, birds and more!

As we're in the midst of another period of hot weather, with an amber heat health alert in place until 9 p.m. on Sunday 12 July, we'd like to share guidance issued by the UK Health Security Agency.
The UKHSA have launched a blog on how to stay healthy when wild swimming - following an increase in cases of gastrointestinal illnesses which coincide with the hot weather. Please take a read if you intend to head out for a dip!
Are you remembering to follow the advice to stay safe in hot weather?
- Keep drinking fluids but avoid too much alcohol.
- Keep that sunscreen topped up throughout the day.
- Close windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun to help keep them cool.

Many of us will be thinking about gardening in this weekend's sunny weather - but if you are gardening and don't know what to do with your garden waste, why not sign up for our garden waste collection service?
A subscription to West Devon Borough Council’s garden waste collection service will cost £70 for 2026/27. One subscription provides four generous reusable sacks, which are collected every fortnight on the same day of the week as your recycling collections, in the opposite week to your black bag refuse collections.
If you sign up, you can put grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, cut flowers and plants, small branches, weeds, leaves, twigs, and vase flowers in your bags for collection.
You can sign up for 2026/27 collections now, with the year’s subscription running until 31 March 2027.
