Ancient and veteran trees

trees

More's being done to help identify, record and look after old trees in West Devon.

Two training events took place recently, in partnership with the South Hams Tree Warden network and the Tree Council, to help wardens develop the skills they need to recognise veteran and ancient trees on the Woodland Trust Inventory.

So far 482 have been recorded.

Further work has been carried out by the Council’s Assets Tree Officer to create detailed management surveys on two of our own veteran trees. We will act on recommendations in the reports to improve their condition and will prepare public information boards for each tree.

The investigation into these trees highlights the commitment from West Devon Borough Council to protect existing trees, woods and hedges.

Spring is here and gardening is back on the agenda, so have you renewed or signed up for a garden waste subscription yet?

A year-long subscription to West Devon Borough Council’s garden waste collection service will cost £70 for 2026/27. One subscription provides four generous reusable sacks, which are collected every fortnight on the same day of the week as your recycling collections, in the opposite week to your black bag refuse collections.

If you sign up, you can put grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, cut flowers and plants, small branches, weeds, leaves, twigs, and vase flowers in your bags for collection.

You can sign up for 2026/27 collections now, with the year’s subscription running until 31 March 2027.
