Setting our budget in difficult times

Two one pound coins stacked on a five pound note. Money.

Amidst a difficult financial background, the council agreed its 2026/2027 budget for the next financial year on Tuesday.

We have raised serious concerns about the Government’s new funding proposals, warning that the plans will leave rural councils, including West Devon, worse off and facing growing pressure on essential services.

We're extremely frustrated that the Government’s "Fairer Funding" settlement fails to recognise the unavoidable extra costs of running rural services and are now lobbying Government to:

  • reinstate a clear, evidence‑led weighting for rurality and remoteness
  • make sure funding decisions are based on up‑to‑date and accurate data
  • acknowledge the genuine cost pressures faced by rural councils

We will continue to lobby the Government to recognise the cost of delivering rural services in future finance settlements.

Have your say on the biggest council shake-up in a generation

Change is coming to local government, with the government planning to replace district and county councils with new unitary authorities delivering all your council services.

The government is holding a consultation on the possible options for Devon – and we need you to tell the government what services matter most to you, and what you need from a new unitary authority.

West Devon Borough Council, along with six of Devon’s other district councils, is supporting the Reimagining Devon proposal, which would see Devon split into three unitary authorities. One would cover Exeter and northern Devon, one would cover Torbay and southern Devon and the final one covers Plymouth, either on its existing boundaries or on a slightly expanded boundary that would include four parishes currently in the South Hams.

The council believes that Reimagining Devon is the most balanced solution for all of Devon, not just those living in West Devon. It is a plan that would deliver efficient and effective services closer to communities, building on the dependable services already being delivered by Devon’s district councils.

The consultation will run for seven weeks, closing on Thursday 26 March.

You can find all the proposals at www.devonlgr.co.uk
