Get ‘Christmas sorted’ early this year, boost our local economy, and create a vibrant community spirit throughout the holiday season.
We’re proud to announce that we are once again supporting our local businesses this Christmas. The campaign encourages everyone, residents and visitors alike, to shop on our high streets and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
To make it even easier, we’re offering free Christmas parking in selected town centre car parks on key dates over the Christmas season. This means you can visit your favourite shops, enjoy the Christmas lights, and take part in the events and entertainment on offer.
We believe our high streets are at the heart of our communities, especially at Christmas. By shopping locally, you’re supporting independent businesses, sustaining jobs, and helping our towns thrive.
We encourage you to take advantage of the free parking, shop locally, and enjoy the festive activities to make this Christmas a truly local celebration.
For more information on events and offers, visit our Christmas events page: www.westdevon.gov.uk/christmas-events or follow us on social media.

This month we’re looking at the history of the mine, Wheal Betsy. You can find the former mine in Mary Tavy alongside the A386, within the heart of West Devon.
Wheal Betsy has a rich history dating back to the first half of the 1700s. Producing lead, copper, silver, arsenic and zinc, the mine faced significant challenges with water management, leading to many closures and reopenings until it finally closed its doors for the last time in 1877.
It is the last standing engine house in Dartmoor, complete with its own leaning chimney. Many mining sites have been historically recorded as being active on Dartmoor, with Wheal Betsy being the last one standing.
The mine was named Heul Betsy when it first began in 1806, before it experienced two name changes, firstly it was renamed the Prince Arthur Consuls, and then became the North Wheal Friendship. Built from locally quarried granite in 1868, the engine house was built to house a Cornish beam pumping engine, and the name was again changed to Wheal Betsy.
