This month, we’re celebrating another of West Devon's striking landmarks: Meldon Viaduct.
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of West Devon, the Meldon Viaduct stands as a testament to the region's rich heritage and engineering prowess. This historic structure was designed by Messrs. Galbraith and Church, engineers for the London and South West Railway (LSWR).
Work started in 1871 with the single track rail line being opened on 12 October 1874, before being doubled to two tracks in 1879 when a second similar viaduct was built alongside and the two were joined together. The viaduct spans 165 metres over the remains of mineral mines and offers a unique glimpse into the past.
