Help to ease the housing crisis

house

We have agreed to invest £80,400 of second home council tax income to help buy two new homes in the Borough —supporting our ongoing efforts to tackle the housing crisis.

The new homes will be bought under the Government's Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF), with the second home council tax income and funding from other sources used to help towards the purchase. This will bring our total homes delivered through the LAHF scheme to 13.

We have also identified one of our existing larger LAHF properties as potential accommodation for young care leavers who find themselves with no place to call home.

We agreed to ringfence all of our second home council tax income for the purpose of housing projects across the Borough, highlighting our commitment to tackling the housing crisis head on.

We are boosting support for care leavers and vulnerable residents.

We’re delivering new financial support through the Government’s Household Support Fund – with help for:

  • Care leavers
  • Carers
  • Low-income families
  • Veterans

Care leavers will receive two £500 payments.

Low-income families (with 3+ children) and carers will get two £150 payments.

We’re also funding local groups like Tamar Energy Community, SSAFA, and Homemaker Southwest to support residents in need.

Help shape Devon's future

We want your help to shape the future of local government in Devon by letting us know what matters to you.

In December 2024, Government set out its intention that all areas with two levels of local government (district and county councils) were required to develop plans for a single level of Government.

In March 2025, a proposal setting out our initial thoughts on the future of local government in Devon was submitted on behalf of all the Devon district councils, except Exeter. Final proposals are now being prepared and are due to be submitted to the Government in November.

Everyone with a connection to West Devon is being asked what matters to them, to help shape our final proposals so that they reflect the needs and aspirations of people living and working in the borough.

The short survey can be found on our website, which also has more information on local government reorganisation, including frequently asked questions.
