Take part in the South Hams Rally for Nature

rallyfornature

Do you want to be involved in an exciting opportunity to help shape a South Hams-wide rally for nature?

We're working with our partners, Sustainable South Hams, to help people connect with nature and the beauty of the South Hams and in so doing increase awareness of and care for our beautiful surroundings.

The hope is that as well as creating some new events specifically for the rally, many existing projects and activities can be incorporated and promoted as part of the celebration.

Two sessions are being held at Follaton House on 15 July for anyone wanting to be involved.

Supporting local market traders to thrive

We are helping local market traders improve their stalls and grow their businesses through our Market Trader Grant.

The support has enabled traders to invest in eco-friendly materials, modern displays, and tools like card payment systems and gazebos — boosting both professionalism and sustainability.

This is part of the our wider commitment to strengthening the local economy, supporting small businesses, and creating vibrant town centres.

Watch how this support is making a difference.

Taking climate action on the water

vessel project

As part of our ongoing commitment to tackle climate change and protect our coastal environment, we’re proud to be supporting a national trial of cleaner, greener marine technology right here in Salcombe.

Our latest video highlights how Salcombe Harbour, with our support, is trialling the use of an electric patrol boat – the RS Electric Boats Pulse 63 – as part of the Government’s 3-year Zero Emission Network of Workboats (ZENOW) project.

The harbour team is testing how electric technology performs in a busy marine environment, helping us explore cleaner, greener alternatives to traditional fossil fuel-powered vessels.

Salcombe is one of 15 sites along the Devon coast to receive an electric workboat as part of this national trial.

We’re proud to be working with partners and our communities to build a cleaner, greener South Hams.

Chewing gum grant

A grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force, administered by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, will help us clean up gum and reduce gum littering.

Along with West Devon Borough Council, we are putting plans in place to remove chewing gum that blights local streets after we received a £23,590 grant to tackle the issue.

Beware of parking fine text scam

parking

We've been made aware that some residents are receiving scam text messages about supposed outstanding parking fines.

  • These messages may look official, but they are not from the council

  • The web addresses in the texts are fake

  • The payment amounts are often incorrect or suspicious

Do not click on any links or provide any personal or payment details.

If you're unsure whether a message is genuine, please contact us -  https://www.southhams.gov.uk/parking

Please share this to help protect others.

Be Waste Aware

fly tip

Please make sure that you check the credentials of any waste collectors you use so you don’t end up being fined.

We have recently issued two Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) in relation to a flytip at Trowelsworthy car park after an individual failed to check the unlicensed waste carrier they used had the appropriate licence.

Our community's cleanliness and safety depends on all of us to take responsibility for how we dispose of our waste. Hiring a licensed waste carrier is a simple but vital step in preventing illegal dumping and ensuring that rubbish is handled properly.

We urge all residents to be vigilant and verify the credentials of any waste carrier they employ. By doing so, we can collectively keep our communities clean and safe. If you see any flytipping, please report it immediately.

Find out more about waste management on the UK Government website.

Thank you for your cooperation.
